Anna had been the one who had come up with the idea in the first place. It would be a wonderful way to put the “pots and pots” of money he had brought into their marriage to good use. Plus it would give them the opportunity to work together. Anna identified with the kids who came to the ranch, particularly teens who had a similar background to her own. Not only was she a good teacher, but at times she was a better counselor than the counselors.
“Nothing fazes you,” Zack said. “I’m really glad you’re in this baby thing with me. You can be the calm, logical mother, and I’ll just panic right and left. Kind of like a good cop, bad cop thing with a twist. Good mommy, nervous daddy.”
“I’m kind of glad you’re in this baby thing, too.” Anna laughed. “I would have had a terrible time doing it without you. Besides, you underestimate yourself. You’re wonderful with the boys you work with, and you know it. And you’ll be wonderful with the baby, too.”
Zack smiled down at her, loving her with his soft eyes. In his heart, he was at peace. Somehow, like orphans in the storm, they had found each other. He never looked at his wife without giving thanks to someone far more knowing and powerful than himself.
“What about as a husband?” he asked softly, kissing the tip of her nose. “How am I doing there?”
“You’re perfect. Usually.”
“Usually?”
“I’m not one to complain, but that kiss was a little…tame. But sweet.”
He still loved challenges. He did much better this time, pressing a long, openmouthed kiss on her lips that left her dizzy. “How’s that?”
Anna wriggled in his arms, finding the porch swing a little cramped. “Improving vastly. Maybe if we changed the location…?”
Zack consulted his watch. “It’s almost 8:00 p.m.,” he said. “Don’t you think it’s late? You should be in bed. Pregnant mommies need lots and lots of sleep.”
She pulled a face. “Zack Daniels, if you think I’m going to sleep—”
“Trust me, sweetheart.”
And Zack Daniels, husband extraordinaire, took it from there.
