Shay cut her eyes at Harmon, neither surprised nor unhappy that he should be in the mix. She crossed her arms and came back at Richard with the confidence of someone who understood her power. “How much?”
“How much?” Richard said, perplexed. “You mean…money?”
“Of course I mean money. You can’t buy me with a couple of outfits.”
“No, no, no, of course not,” Richard stammered. And then, “What do you want?”
“Whatever Harmon gets.”
“Done.”
Shay lay back on the blanket, got comfortable in the sun, and closed her eyes. A fly buzzed around her nose and she brushed it away. After a minute, she said, “I had this knife. The Secret Service has it now.”
Richard said, “I know about that.”
“I’d want to take it with me,” Shay said.
“Sure,” Richard replied.
“And X,” Shay said. “My dog comes, too.”
