“Devin. I was just thinking about you.”

“Do you have any new information?”

“I do,” he said. “Ghost called a few minutes ago. Intel managed to identify Fai Meng’s superior. He’s a man by the name of Qing Yao.”

“He worked at Revival Financial too. In fact, I think he was Fai’s boss.”

“That’s right. Unfortunately for Qing, he decided to travel to Taiwan yesterday.” He paused for effect. “Evidently someone tipped the Taiwanese government off that Qing is Chinese intelligence. We expect his detainment will last for at least a few years.”

  “He’s in prison?”

“He is, and from what Ghost said, the Chinese government has disavowed him. That means he’s lost access to any resources he could have used previously if he was still bent on coming after you.”

  “So it’s over.”

  “It’s over.”

“I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear that,” Devin said. “Thank you so much for everything.”

  “There is one more thing.”

  “What’s that?”

“I heard from your new personnel officer. Considering your cover was compromised, they approved a temporary assignment to the Air Force Academy if you’re interested. You would be teaching Mandarin.”

“Seriously? That would be great.” Devin looked at Grace, who was obviously confused, and reached out to give her hand a squeeze. “How long would it be for?”

“You’ll have some say in the matter. Two to three years is the recommended tour, but it is possible to extend up to five years.”

  “Thank you so much.”

“I’m heading back to Hong Kong tomorrow, but Linda, your new personnel officer, will be calling you on Monday.”

  “Safe travels.”

After Devin hung up the phone, he asked Grace, “How would you feel about moving to Colorado Springs?”

“Are you talking about the Air Force Academy?”

“I am. Chee said I can have a teaching position there if I want it. It could last anywhere from two to five years.”

“So we could be kind of close to Grandpa while the girls are little.”

“Exactly.” Devin nodded. “And I have to imagine I would have school holidays off, so we could come visit pretty often.”

  “I would love that.”

“I can’t guarantee I wouldn’t get transferred to the DC area afterward, but at least I would fulfill my five-year commitment to the agency.”

“After all we’ve been through, all I really want is for us to be together.”

“What about your career?” Devin asked. “We never really talked about what you want to do next.”

“I’m doing some financial planning, which I love, but I’d like to keep that part-time.” She looked over at the bassinets. “More than anything, I want to stay at home and be a mom.”

“You’re already doing a great job.” He scooted closer and kissed her. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” She pressed her lips against his and added, “I’m really glad I married you.”

“Even after everything I put you through this year?”

“We promised for better or worse.”

“We’ve done the worse,” Devin said. “This year let’s plan to stay on the better side.”

One of the babies let out a little whimper but settled down a moment later. “I think we’ve already started.”
