The Price of Brimstone Page 44

by Allie Gail

Everyone stops what they're doing to gawk at her in amazement. Two of the nurses rush around from behind the counter to see what she's gone all hysterical about. Their coworker is stomping and bellowing like an angry bull, pointing at the snarling creature that she claims has just attacked her. But of course, no one else sees a thing.

  Because there's nothing to see.

A couple of doors swing open, heads poking out to see what all the commotion is about. I've drawn too much attention. I should probably take my leave before I'm discovered. Jude doesn't need this. Not today, of all days.

“Hope you enjoy your rabies shots,” I call cheerfully as the elevator doors close.

  I couldn't resist.

Type O Negative is being piped in softly through a speaker. I find that delightfully unorthodox. A definite improvement over the instrumental jazz they put you to sleep with in supermarkets and malls. That prerecorded Muzak crap should've been left back in the fifties. Glad someone here is getting with the times. Peter Steele would approve.

Feeling somewhat more heartened, I continue whistling Summer Breeze as I stroll out of the hospital and into the August heat. I probably shouldn't have screwed around with that nurse. Foolishness like that isn't going to further my case with the gentleman upstairs. But a boy has to have his fun, doesn't he? Life isn't all prayer meetings and piety.

Anyway, forgive the fuck out of me for being me! I'm new at this, remember? It only stands to reason that along the way, I'll suffer a few setbacks. Behaving respectably is proving to be much harder than I anticipated. It's bound to take time. Good thing that's something I have in abundant supply.

Rome wasn't built in a day, after all.

And for me, it's a long road ahead.

  About the Author

Born and raised in small-town Alabama, Allie Gail currently resides in the panhandle of Florida with her schmexy blue-eyed hubby, where they are currently being held hostage by a temperamental gray entity disguised as a cat. (If you’re reading this – send help! Oh, and tuna. Send lots of tuna.) Always an obsessive reader, she took to her keyboard on a whim back in 2012 and hasn’t stopped writing since.

When she isn’t busy obsessing over the lexicon of her latest project, Allie can usually be found snuggled up to her hubby watching Netflix, helping out with the family business or playing online RPG games while indulging her hopeless addiction to Tootsie Rolls.

In other words, she’s a total nerd.

Don’t fault her that, though. Her paladin will someday save the world. Or at the very least, have some really pretty matching plate armor.
