  After a minute—or an eternity—she felt an inexorable build, a slow momentum churning toward its inevitable conclusion. She felt him tense and gasp, and she collapsed against him, feeling the warmth of his hands on her suddenly cool body.

  “You know, Titania, you are a quick learner,” he said, smiling. His eyes were closed, his breathing was slowing, and she could tell it was only a matter of time before he fell asleep.

  She kissed the corner of his mouth softly. “Learning something completely takes practice, study, and practice. My governess taught me that.”

  “Wise governess,” he said as he drifted off to sleep.

  After watching him for a few minutes, Titania rose from the bed, feeling new muscles objecting as she reached for her chemise. Throwing it on almost as quickly as she had discarded it, she walked to the small desk, which she hoped would house writing implements and paper. She found them, pushed her hair impatiently behind her ears, and began to write.

  Despatch from the battle front, August 1813:

  Every good general knows when to accept defeat.

  It was not possible to withstand the enemy, and we have been taken.

  Who could have conceived the hunter would be hunted? There is no way to prepare for the attack of such a resolute and better-armed (and broader-shouldered) foe.

  No matter how many pretty gowns are fitted to intrigue, no matter how many fans are waved in secret semaphore, no matter how many witty banters are enciphered, the heart can always betray the general’s plan.

  My conqueror is a gracious victor, however, and honors us both by his declaration of terms: we shall share the spoils of war: love, marriage, children. I have surrendered.
