Ashes (The Slayer Chronicles Book 3) Page 22

by Val St. Crowe

  “I do?”

“Well, I figured you’d be staying with me every other night, and I thought you wouldn’t want to pack all the time, so I just ordered some stuff. They’re in the first guest room, which I sort of made your room.” He cleared his throat. “I mean, if everything is over between us, I guess…” He looked at his shoes.

  I coughed.

“Anyway,” he said, “why don’t you pack from what’s here, and I’ll meet you in the car. I’ll get Gordon on the phone, tell him we need to go ASAP.” Gordon was the pilot Naelen paid to fly us around.

I nodded. “Sure, okay. I’ll do that.”

  He nodded too.

We stood there, bobbing our heads at each other like idiots for several more moments before breaking off to get ready to leave.

I was glad to be headed off to kill monsters, actually. It was a good distraction for the fact that my heart had just been shattered into a million pieces.

  Author’s Note

“Enough with the cliffhangers!” you are saying.

I hear you. I promise that the fourth book, which will be called Flames, will tie up all the loose arcs between Clarke and Naelen and the magical objects and bring the characters together, just the two of them. Also keep your eyes peeled in 2017 for a spin-off story about Logan, wherein he’ll end up happy too.

Just want to note that my personal feelings about the polyamorous lifestyle are very positive, so don’t take the fact it didn’t work out for my main characters as meaning anything. It doesn’t.

This is a story I’ve been wanting to write for a long time. I think it first started percolating way back in the day when Anita Blake started having more and more boyfriends, and I was like, “Where is the conflict between these guys?” (Full disclosure: I find that kind of thing really hot. All the half-naked guys punching each other in Fight Club… yeah, well, ‘nuff said.) I think that if there’s one girl and more than one guy, not having some guy-on-guy angst is just a missed opportunity. So, I always wanted to write that. Love me some angst. I had a LOT of fun writing this book. I think it’s my favorite book that I’ve written this year.

This book had a bit more in the way of sex scenes than the other books, but I made a goal when I started this series to try to keep the heat level from overpowering the plot. My little rule has been no naming of body parts, and I’ve been able to stick with that for the most part. Things are always going to smolder between Clarke and Naelen, of course, but it’s not going to get hotter or more detailed than this.

Finally, thanks for sticking with me on this ride. Every book you buy or page you read with KU is much appreciated, and I can’t say enough how grateful I am for readers like you. You’re all aces. Mmwahhhh! Thanks again.
