Forbitten (A Twist of Fate Novella Book 1) Page 9

by J. P. Uvalle

“NOOO! SOMEONE HELP ME!” I hear Leo scream. The tunnel is too narrow to fly down, so I sprint as fast as I can, following the sound of his voice.

I come to a part of the tunnel that’s lined with candles. When I reach a dead end, I find Leo lying in the middle of a circular slab of rock. Unconscious now, but he doesn’t seem to be bleeding from anywhere. I beam around for a sight of the Dycipher who took him, but with the room being the way it is there’s no place a beast that gigantic to hide.

  I gulp.

  It can’t be…

I hear the sound of clapping, and I turn around to find Leo standing up with a devious smile on his face. “It’s been a long time coming, Trinity, but here we are. You and me. How it was all meant to be.”

I shoot him a sideways glance. “Long time coming?”

He walks circles around me, laughing. “Yes, I’ve had my eyes on you since the day you were born. But, of course, I had to wait until you were of age and for things to fall into alignment before I could make my move.

  “Alignment?”

I feel a history lesson coming on.

“What’s today’s date?” he asks with a smile

  “June 3rd, 2016, why?”

Then the realization of what this date means hits me like a fist.

  Oh…6 (3+2+0+1) 6 = 666

“Duh, Trinity. If you cared less about fashion and more about vampire and demon ritual-like shit you’d better prepare for shit like this,” I smack my palm to my forehead.

“The prophecy—the end of the human world and the birth of the demon world. Elder Aragón thought he was smart by awakening Lord Vladimir to throw a large fucking wrench in my plan. His efforts are laughable really because I’ve got you now, my little vamp-demon. And together, we're going to open the gates of hell. Your blood—whether you’re alive or dead—is the key.”

  Shit!

I've been marked since birth to open the fiery gates? Of course, my blood type would be the key to ending the world. That's just been my luck lately. But I refuse to allow this to happen. I refuse to allow whatever he plans to unleash from the darkest pits of hell, into the world. I refuse on my father's grave. I hold the heart of my necklace in my hand and bring it to my lips to kiss the gold.

  This is for you, Papa.

He always told me to face my demons head on.

With a devious smirk, I let Leo believe he's won. I indulge in his fantasy of bringing forth the unearthly apocalypse by clasping my hands with his, over the portal to hell. The portal ready to consume my powerful essence.

  The key.

His eyes and the veins underneath his skin turn black. He’s chanting the weirdest shit I've ever heard, the ground around us begins to shake. I pick this time as good as any to stab him in the eyeballs with my long, searing claws.

He tumbles backward, covering his eyes. “You fucking bitch.”

“Not a bigger bitch than you, Dycipher breath.”

Oddly he laughs. “I'll show you Dycipher breath, all right.”

The ground continues to rumble beneath us while he flings his head back, possessed, penetrating the air with his ear-piercing roar. And since he momentarily has his guard down, pounding his chest like his fucking King Kong, I strike again. This time with a kick to his chest. He heaves over to the ground on all fours, and from what I’d experienced earlier—with that rage rapidly stammering through me—this wasn’t a good sign for my survival. Not at all.

Watching the ghastly wings rip through his back, I debate running, doubting I’m strong enough to take on King-Double-Douche-bag myself. But against the alarms buzzing inside my head, I stand my ground. My father also taught me never to give up. So I stay, even if it means it will lead to my untimely and gruesome death. At least I’ll go down fighting.

Standing, and squawking waves of heat in my direction, his body ripples, extending upward. Leo grows another foot, along with his claws. Fangs so long and sharp, they hang over his lower lip. Eyes a firing storm. Menacing as all evil, his chest heaves ferociously as he charges in for the kill.

  Fuck my life.

Flapping my wings, I ascend above him the precise moment he tries to drive his claws through my torso like a sword. The near-miss has my heart beats tripling, and for the first time in my undead life, I’m thankful for my Dycipher-like gifts. If I were a mere vampire trying to go against this demon, I would be dust.

I swarm around in what little space I have, dodging critical blows, lucky enough to get a few swipes in myself. But the longer I’m in the air, the faster my energy is draining. I’m terrified at the thought I’ll eventually lose by stamina and have to resort to battling him on the ground.

How much longer will I be able to keep this up?

  Chapter Twenty

  Lord Vladimir

MASTER LUCARIS HAS disguised himself as Leo, and God who knows who else. That’s a Dycipher for you. They’re good at deceit. His whole plan was to use Trinity to open up the gates to hell. Well, he picked the wrong girl to fuck with. I’m back in the junkyard, tossing cars left and right to find the entryway to their den.

“Lord Vladimir,” I hear a soft voice say.

I turn on a dime to find Emma standing there. She waves her hand in the air and unveils a circular portal to me. “Only Dyciphers can walk through the portal, but lucky for you, I can do magic,” she smirks. Then she chants a few lines and waves her arms around me. Nothing about me changes, but I know what she has done. She as cloaked me so I can pass through the portal without being detected.

“Thanks, Emma, you’ve always been good to me.”

“Not a problem, my Lord. Now go get the girl.” She winks before disappearing into the lightly clouded night.

I fall into a pit of liquid, soon realizing its blood by the copper taste and smell. It’s pitch dark, so I refocus my eyes to maneuver around in this environment, which seems to quake. My ears pick up on echoes in the distance. One belonging to my love, Trinity, and the other, Master Lucaris. I jump out of the blood pool and sprint down the tunnel to find Trinity in the air, impaled by his claws. Blood gushing from her chest and mouth. She tries to lift a smile but coughs out blood instead. Without further thought, I rush forward.

“Lord Vladimir,” Master Lucaris, growls as he flings Trinity across the tunnel.

She slams into the wall—you can hear the snap of one of her wings echo throughout the tunnel.

“You’re gonna die for that.” I strike him several times in the chest.

Laughing, he whips around and smacks me in the face with his wings. “Lord Vladimir you’re too late. The gate will be open soon.

“Whatever comes up, you’re going back down with it.”

Blow for blow and pound for pound, we tear each other apart as the ground rumbles between our feet. The portal is slowly opening. Both covered in the other’s blood. While beating him senseless, I jog my memory about the prophecy and how we can reclose the gates to hell.

If Trinity’s blood can open it, maybe her blood can close it?

I glance over briefly to find her still knocked out cold. I focus harder on winning this fight. I have to end him soon before the gate fully opens up. I corner him in part of the tunnel where he can’t so easily fly around me. And when he tries, I grab hold of his wing and hold him in place.

I hear shuffling behind me. I turn back and see Trinity standing at the opening of the tunnel. Red eyes so bright they highlight the outline of the tunnel. Her growl adds to the shaking already taking place. Fists are balled at her side, and her chest is rising and falling so fast it’s practically a blur. We both have our jaws hug open in awe.

Propelling her body forward she flies at us like a shooting bullet. I grip a tighter hold on Lucaris, as she extends her arms into his chest and flips backward, slicing him up at the same time as ripping out his heart.

The shaking becomes more violent now. “We don’t have much time; we have to find Emma.” I grab he
r hand, and we run down. We screech to a halt when Emma appears with her head hung low, with Elder Aragón behind her. He walks as if he his floating above the ground.

“Emma, Trinity, close the portal, now,” he roars.

They jump from at the sound of his voice but scurry along to do as they are told. Elder Aragón drifts his vision over to me, and I immediately fall to my knees. I know what is about to happen. He’s about to destroy me.

“Lord Vladimir. You are a disgrace to your kindred and the city of New York. We have rules set in place for a reason. And what you have done is strictly Forbitten.” He bends down and snatches me up by my neck and lifts me up to his eye level. I close my eyes. He’ll see me as a threat if I open them.

“Please, my Elder,” I choke. “Have mercy on my soul.”

Growling, his grip loosens before dropping me to the ground. I heave over, trying to catch my breath. Trinity runs up to comfort me with tears in her eyes.

“Lord Vladimir and Trinity James,” his voice booms. “I hereby excommunicate you both from the city of New York. Never to return again or you will be destroyed.” He raises his arms, and a shock wave shoots out through his skin. The wave surrounds us in an orb, and the next thing I know, we’re on the outside looking in. At the place we once used to call our home.

  New York City.

  Delia must’ve told him everything.

Trinity must’ve heard my inner thought, shifting her head to look me dead in the eye sends a shock of fear down my spine. Turning back, her breathing quickens and she runs forward only to be knocked back by the barrier.

  She doesn’t give up.

Demonic roars escape her as she dodges forward repeatedly, reciting…

  “Kill Aragón.”

  “Kill Delia.”
