Pulse (Contemporary new adult/college romance) (Club Grit Trilogy) Page 18

by Brooke Jaxsen

But this year, Skylar was with us, and although he had to sleep in my brother’s room because my parents were old-fashioned, we felt closer than ever.

The last thing I’d expected was for Skylar to get old fashioned.

For him to get down on one knee after asking my father’s permission a few days earlier.

For him to pull out a small velvet box, and to present me with a ring: a thin, rose gold band with a heart shaped diamond held by two small hands.

“Emma, ever since I’ve met you, my life hasn’t been the same. At some points, it’s been worse when bad things have happened to you and I’ve had to learn to cope. At most points, it’s been the most amazing experience in my life. I can’t promise you it’ll always be easy, just that I’ll always be there for you because we’re living lives too exciting to live alone. Emma May Nelson, will you do the honor of becoming my wife?” was the most formal question I’d heard come out of his mouth, at least since he’d given me the promise ring I still had on my finger. “I promise that I will love you from now until the end of time, because you were the beginning of my forever.”

“Yes, a hundred times, yes,” was the most important answer I’d given to a question and ever would.

As we kissed under the lights of the fireworks which swirled like a million fireflies, just like that Owl City song, I could have sworn I was flying, until I opened my eyes and saw Skylar had lifted me up into the air. I looked and saw my mom crying, my dad giving me a thumbs up the way he had at the hospital months upon months ago, and my older siblings smiling. I’d grown up so much over these last two years. Skylar had turned me from a girl into a woman, and now, he’d make me into his wife.

  The Playlist

I listened to a lot of good music while I wrote this book. Some of the songs inspired certain scenes (“Things I’ll Never Say”, “New Perspective”), certain dialogues (“Lips of an Angel”, “You Found Me”), certain themes (“Sk8r Boi”, “Radioactive”), while others were just inspirational and kept me going (“Roar”, “Sally’s Song”). Hopefully some of these songs will make a difference for you too.

  About the Author

Brooke Jaxsen. 20. Girl in college, majoring in English with a concentration in Creative Writing, obv. I’m writing new adult romance novels, mostly contemporary, but expect some fantasy and paranormal in the months to come! I’ve always wanted to be a writer but never thought that people would actually want to read the kinds of stories I write: the ones about girls like me, who every day (and night) are one step closer to full adulthood, to full womanhood.

In my free time, I read lots of new adult and yo ung adult fiction, swim, shop, sleep, do my nails, and play video games. Blog all day, party all night. I’m on the Internet far too much for my own good.

“Pulse” is my first novel, in my “Club Grit” trilogy. Look out for “Throb”, a story about Becca, and “Shattered”, a story about Kim (yes, that Kim, Kim Lee!), the girl behind all the drama at Omega Mu Gamma. All three stories are about Omega girls and the trouble they get into at Club Grit. You don’t want to miss this.
