His nose against the window, Emmanuel saw the level-crossing gates pass by, and the Sacred Heart in bronze, and the switcher's cabin on its piles. He saw a tree in a backyard, its branches tortured among electric wires and clotheslines, its leaves dry and shrivelled before they were fully out.
Low in the sky, dark clouds heralded the storm.
