  But she wouldn't; I knew that. I would call and tell her that Frankie was safe. Then I would hang up. After that, what would I do? I would go to Wakefield, because that was my part of the bargain, and if they wanted to send me to college, I guess I would do that, too. But would I come into the business the way they expected me to? I had just spent ten minutes trading for people's lives. Was that what you had to do if you wanted power? Did I want to be that way?

  I didn't know. “Thank you,” I said. Then I went out of the office and down the hall to call Marie.
