“You watch porn?” she asked, aghast. She’d watched it herself, once or twice, but Diesel was still considered a minor.

“Yes,” he crowed. “I’d know how to please you so good.” He cocked his head to the side. “You aren’t angry about the porn?”

“I’m surprised. You’re too young to watch that stuff, but I’m not angry.”

Diesel’s grin showed off his dimples. With his gray eyes and black hair, he was already a handsome kid. When he reached his adult height, he’d be something to behold.

“Uncle Chris said to choose a wife I can be friends with. Him and Aunt Meggie are best friends. We have so much fun together in the evenings. Then, they shoo us, so they can be alone in the den. Aunt Meggie is always giggling. No matter what Uncle Chris says, she rarely gets mad at him. That’s the kind of chick I want. One who’ll allow me to be myself and make mistakes. You wouldn’t do that?”

“I don’t know,” she said. She could always tell him she was in love with another man, but that would only be a half truth. It didn’t matter that she’d broken up with Cash and Stretch, they were still embedded in her soul. No amount of talking to Noah or hanging out with him assuaged her devastation.

“It depends on what those mistakes are. If they involve other women, no. You’d have to be completely into me for the rest of your life. No porn. No talking to other girls, even as friends.”

The more she spoke, the more bemused Diesel looked.

“I wouldn’t even want you to have a female professor.”

Diesel stood. “Fee, you’re a wonderful woman. Everything I said, but…” Voice trailing off, he shifted his weight. “Would you hate me if I withdrew my proposal?”

She applauded her tactics that kept Diesel’s pride intact. “Of course not.”

“Cash!” Meggie’s happy call floated up the stairs.

Shoving his hands in his pockets, Diesel looked toward the staircase.

  “Hey, Stretch,” Bailey greeted.

Now that the music was off and Fee was tuned in to the party downstairs, she heard everything.

“I’m going to head out,” she said. “Would you tell Meggie and Zoann I’ll call them later?”

  “Yeah.”

Glad that she’d stuck her license and a debit card in her pocket, Fee hurried down the staircase and out the front door before anyone spotted her. With the sadness chasing her today, she didn’t need to add to it by facing Cash and Stretch, knowing the future she thought she’d had with them was no more, and never would be.

“I not coming with you and MegAnn?”

Pausing in the pretense of looking through CJ’s clothes, Christopher frowned down at his boy. It had been weeks since he’d called Megan anything other than mommie. “No, you goin’ to Aunt Zoann with Rule and Rebel.”

“I wanna go with Bun-Bun and Ryder if I not going with you and MegAnn.”

“Ryder got a earache, boy. Bunny takin’ him to the doctor.”

Tears filled CJ’s eyes, and he sniffled. “I go with you, ‘Law.”

“My ass don’t wanna go with me.” Not to get a consultation about his dick snip, but he’d finally gotten Megan to agree that it was time. After the finalized plans for the christenings this coming weekend, he’d get back to the doctor with a date for his castration. Or what the fuck ever other motherfuckers called it. “Mommie goin’ to a fuckin’ doctor with me. Other-fuckin-wise, me, you, and Rule would be going some-fuckin-where while your ma and sister went with Bunny to look at wedding dresses.”

CJ blinked, clueless at Christopher’s long-ass explanation. At least, his tears went away. Going back to pretending to find something other than a cut, white T-shirt, and jeans for CJ, Christopher let his boy think about the explanation.

“Law got a boo-boo?” he asked after a moment.

Not fucking yet. Soon, ‘Law would have a big fucking boo-boo. “No, boy. Just a checkup.”

“Ashfuck doc,” he said gravely, his little face scrunched up.

“Yeah, doctor a real motherfucker,” Christopher agreed, pulling a clean pair of blue jeans and a spotless white T-shirt off hangars and handing them to his son. “Get dressed while I get your fuckin’ boots.”

“I gotta pee,” CJ yelled, running to the bathroom he shared with the twins.

Christopher smiled at his son’s energy. If only the Roxy situation was as easy. Between Mort’s conversation last week and Riley’s report this morning, the outlook wasn’t good. She had cancer, and he felt so bad for discovering the shit that not even Mort knew. The picture he’d managed to obtain showed her bald headed with a shirt that said Fuck cancer.

  He grinned. Typical Roxanne.

Before he proceeded, he’d talk to Megan. This wasn’t club fucking business. This was about family, and he needed her advice.

  “Back, ‘Law,” CJ announced.

  “You washed your hands?”

  “Uh huh.”

“Okay, get dressed. Oh yeah, don’t fuck up Ryan. Okay? He don’t like to fight, so leave him alone. If you fuck with him, I’ma beat your lil’ ass. Hear me?”

“Uh huh. I not gonna fuck with Ro neither.”

“Either,” Christopher corrected. “You not fuckin’ with Rory either.”

“Ro ain’t talking a lot, ‘Law. Him say sir and ma’am. Him ain’t crying a lot no more. Ryan make fun of Ro a lot. I tell Uncle Val, but him say him gotta stick up for himself. Ryan a ashfuck, though. Him cry with me, but hit Ro. Next time him hit Ro, I’ma make him bleed.”

Fuck, just another example of him having to watch what the fuck he said in front his kid. CJ didn’t even understand what the fuck I’ma make him bleed meant, especially from Christopher, which generally meant motherfuckers would fucking bite it. He couldn’t have his boy making violent threats, just weeks away from starting school. “No, the fuck you ain’t,” he snapped, more shocked than he cared to admit. Almost fuck-all shocked him, but CJ did it on the fucking regular. “Tell Aunt Zoann when Ryan do that. Wait til you fuckin’ older before you punch out stupid motherfuckers. Okay? A good leader use brains and fists. Hear me, boy? Make sure Ryan and Rory ain’t playing some kind of fucked up game.”

“I said Ryan a ashfuck, ‘Law,” CJ said in exasperation. “Him not playing no game with Ro. Him mean. Him know I don’t keep licks. Ro do.”

“I’ma talk to Uncle Val.” If Val was allowing Ryan to mistreat Rory, Christopher intended to kick the fuck out of him. They needed to teach their sons to have each other’s backs. “Okay? Just stay the fuck outta it for now.”

“’Kay, ‘Law.” As he zipped his jeans, he turned to the door and his eyes lit up. “MegAnn!” he screamed.

“Sweet potato,” Megan responded as she walked in, wearing a sleeveless, skintight, bright red jumpsuit and stilettos. Yesterday, at the Mother’s Day celebration, she’d looked sweet and innocent in white. Today, she was pure sex and her smile lit up the entire room.

Unable to resist, Christopher pulled her to him and kissed her. “Hey, baby.”

“Hey, you,” she whispered, kissing him again then looking at their boy. “Aunt Zoann is downstairs waiting for you.”

CJ glanced between Megan and Christopher, all his happiness fleeing.

Megan rushed to him and stooped down. “What is it, buddy?”

“I go with you and ‘Law.”

  “Um…”

Christopher gritted his teeth. Despite the reason for them being alone, he was looking forward to having Megan all to himself. Last night, Ryder had been cranky so Megan had kept their youngest in the room with them. Now, at mid-morning, with Bunny rushing off in hopes of bringing their kid back in time to get to her dress hunt, Megan was on the verge of giving in to CJ.

“You’re going to have fun with your cousins and the twins,” she tried.

“I not! I wanna go with you and ‘Law.”

Megan sat on the floor and pulled CJ into her arms, soothing his sobs with soft words.

“You will?” CJ sniffled, responding to
whatever she’d whispered to him.

  “Yep.”

“I not coming with you, though?”

“No,” she said. “Mommie wants a spin with Daddy.”

“Mommie always go for a spin with ‘Law,” CJ complained. “Every day!”

  “I don’t. I haven’t been on Daddy’s bike in days.”

“I not going with Rule and Rebel to Ant Zoann, MegAnn,” CJ said. “I going with you and ‘Law.”

  “But—”

“No!” he shouted defiantly, tears sliding down his cheeks.

“Come here, CJ,” Christopher demanded, slightly appeased when his kid complied immediately and looked up at him. “You gonna turn the fuck around and apologize to your ma. If you ever talk to her in that fuckin’ tone again, you ain’t gonna see Harley for a fuckin’ week. Your ma tell you to do something, you fuckin’ do it. She your ma. You not her pops. She ain’t gotta explain a fuckin’ thing to you about what the fuck she wanna do or why she wanna do it. Hear me?”

By the time he was finished, CJ had thrown himself on the floor, sobbing so pitifully Christopher turned away. But, fuck, his boy was a handful. Although he wanted to tell her to let him stew in Christopher’s words, he didn’t stop Megan from picking their kid up. Besides, Christopher figured it would once more demonstrate each of their roles in their household.

“I’ll meet you downstairs,” she said to Christopher, setting CJ on his feet and grabbing his hand before guiding him out.

Her fluttering hair and graceful movements drew Christopher’s attention as much as the sway of her hips.

After setting the thermostat and timer on the lights in their bedroom, Christopher made his way downstairs. Soft music pumped through the sound system, reminding him of their quiet time together in the den most nights. Just as the thought crossed his mind, the music stopped and Megan walked into the hallway.

She looked so fucking fuckable. Fuck, he could rip her jumpsuit off and fuck her for hours. Her eyes twinkling, she gave him the once over and winked at him.

“Little bitch,” he said with a chuckle.

  “Behave.”

“My boy went with Bitsy without a fuckin’ tantrum?”

Megan poked her tongue out at him. “What do you think? He’s your son. You two are stubborn alike.”

Christopher had much better uses for her tongue. As he thought of having it wrapped around his cock, she continued talking.

“Kendall isn’t feeling well and is demanding Johnnie drive her to Portland to the shop where Bunny is going to look at gowns.”

“You talked to Johnnie’s bitch?” It had been days since Megan had spoken to Kendall on the telephone.

“No. Fee. Kendall’s having Johnnie pick Fee up because they haven’t seen each other in a while. Fee wanted to know if I might make it, and I told her probably not.”

He couldn’t detect if she was disappointed or not. “You can go if you wanna.”

“I want to be with you,” she said, and he saw the truth of her statement in her lovely eyes. “I always want to be with you.”

“I always wanna be with you, baby.”

“I was just telling you because Bunny might end up taking Ryder with her to look at wedding gowns. I don’t want Ryder and Johnnie in the same place together to set her off.”

Yeah, cuz psycho cunts that said Megan and Johnnie fucked belonged in psycho camps to keep Christopher from fucking her up.

  Megan smiled. “Ready?” she asked.

He walked to her and grabbed her by the waist. “To fuck.”

She giggled. “We have an appointment to get to.”

Backing her against the wall, he pressed his hard cock into her belly, breathing in her cherry blossom scent. Thinking of Roxy made him tighten his hold on Megan. “I found out why Roxy not been here,” he whispered, tangling his fingers through her hair to draw strength from her. He kissed her hairline. “She got cancer, baby.”

Saying those words in association with somebody he knew and cared about seemed like he’d floated out of his body and landed somewhere else.

  Megan went still. “What?”

He drew in a deep breath, then pulled away from her and got his phone out of his pocket. Finding the email Riley sent to him after this morning’s conversation, he opened the photo that rocked the fuck out of his world. The one where Roxy had no hair. “Here,” he said, handing Megan the phone.

Glancing at the photo, Megan paled and her mouth fell open.

“Mort know she sick, but he don’t know why. What the fuck I do, Megan?”

She embraced him. “Tell Mortician,” she wobbled out, resting her head on his chest and releasing a sigh-sob. “Tonight, I’m going to call Roxy and ask if there’s anything I can do. Ask her why she wouldn’t tell me before. At least, we now know why she hasn’t called.”

  “And Bailey? Tell her?”

  “Would you tell me?”

“Yes,” Christopher answered without hesitation. “Why? What that got to do with this?”

“If you’d tell me, then Mortician should tell Bailey.”

Just what the fuck should he make of that? “You basin’ what other motherfuckers should know by what the fuck I do?”

“Yes.” Releasing him, she looked up at him. “We’ll have to tell Bailey before we tell Kendall.”

Yeah, cuz Kendall would take the fucking news as fucking bad or fucking worse than Bailey.

“If Roxy and Bailey need me to go to New Orleans, then…?”

He kissed her forehead. “Then go, Megan. You Roxy friend. Even if she wasn’t, she Mort ma-in-law, so you wanna check on her.”

“Everything’s happening at once,” she said quietly. “Bunny’s pregnant and getting married. Kendall’s pregnant. The kids are getting christened. CJ’s about to be four. Roxy has cancer and you’re having your vasectomy.”

“Roxy gonna be fine, baby,” he swore, swiping away a stray tear. “And I’m just gonna get information about my dick snip. Ain’t nothin’ written in fuckin’ stone. Okay?”

No way would he add to her distress by telling her this was. Unless something drastic happened, he intended to get the vasectomy sooner rather than later, so he’d never have to face the prospect of losing her again, as they now feared losing Roxy.

“What do you think about this one?”

Fee studied the off-the-rack wedding gown Bunny held up for her inspection. The mint green tulle and lace had a low cut bodice and a mermaid hemline. “It’s beautiful, but a white leather wedding gown would be the shit.”

Kendall sat in one of the two seats in the little boutique Meggie had suggested to Bunny. “Leather for a wedding gown? Still going on about that,” she snorted. “That’s so fucking tacky.”

“Says you.” Fee ignored how difficult Kendall had been all afternoon. “If I ever get married, I intend to have leather for my gown, leather for the bridesmaids. Leather everything.”

In silent agreement with Fee to ignore Kendall’s grumpiness, Bunny returned the gown to the rack and grabbed another one, a blue satin inlaid with tiny pearls. “I would love a leather wedding gown. That would have to be custom made and I’m trying to keep the costs down.”

“As opposed to what?” Kendall grumbled and nodded to the gown Bunny inspected. “You’ve yet to look at something under two grand.”

Bunny pointed to the mint green. “That one was five. See where it’s at? Back on the rack.”

“If you don’t want to spend that kind of money, you shouldn’t have come to an exclusive boutique,” Kendall retorted.

“Meggie sent us here,” Fee pointed out. Irritation surged through her at Kendall’s glower upon the mention of their sister-in-law.

“Yes, well, of course Bunny couldn’t say no to that recommendation,” Kendall said sarcastically. “If Meggie says to shop here, then we run to shop here.”

“Umm, yeah, you know what?” Bunny returned her latest gown to the rack with more force than necessary. “Let’s call it a day. Kendall, I know
pregnancy is difficult, so let’s do this some other time.”

Laying a hand against her belly, Kendall poked her bottom lip out. “You don’t know anything about pregnancy,” she grouched. “You never carried a baby to full term, therefore you can’t place yourself in my shoes.”

Fee winced at Kendall’s callousness. A beating from her ex led Bunny to miscarrying. She was expecting again, although no one had told Kendall yet. “Kendall, that isn’t nice. You’re aware of what happened to Bunny. You should take better care with your words.”

“Whatever.” Kendall shoved her phone back into her purse. “I just texted Johnnie.”

Eyes glistening, Bunny turned back to the rack of gowns. Fee rushed to the other woman’s side. “It’s okay.”

“It is,” Bunny agreed with a deep breath. “She needs to watch what she says, though.”

“With Kendall, we have to take the good with the bad.”

“By the way, Bunny,” Kendall continued. “You’re stupid. You should’ve seen to your gown months ago.”

Bunny went rigid as Fee scowled.

“Mark wants to pay for everything and he just got the money for the gown,” Bunny explained.

“Mother!” a little kid squealed, as another baby’s babble reached them, breaking through the tension.

Fee turned as Rory bounced to her, his blond hair styled like his father’s, as was his boots, jeans, and T-shirt. Although Rory stood mere inches from Kendall, she focused on her husband, who held Ryder.

Smiling, Johnnie bent and kissed Kendall’s mouth. “Hey, gorgeous.”

Johnnie had taken Rory and Ryder to a kid-friendly McDonald’s not far away, while Kendall, Bunny and Fee browsed the store.

“Rory,” Fee greeted, hi-fiving Rory and giggling when Ryder held up his little hand. “All right, bud. You get a hi-five, too.”

She took the kid into her arms, nodding at his babbling.

  “Bathroom, Dad,” Rory demanded.

“I’ll take him,” Bunny volunteered, forcing a smile on her face, the sudden tension from Kendall hard to miss. Kendall kept her eyes trained on Ryder.

  “Thanks,” Johnnie said.
