Catfish handled the vehicles, driving them to the back of the compound and assessing them for mechanical damage from stray bullets.
With everyone working together, most everything got done. And late that afternoon, Steven led the memorial service, at the grave sites down by the creek. He was much too weak to walk on crutches, so Danny, Chris, and Jack carried him to the wheel barrow and took turns pushing him to the old oak tree.
Steven prepared a short sermonette focused on the hope of the resurrection. Everyone attended, except Nick, as he had lost a lot of blood the day before and would be recuperating for a few days.
Tracey, Jason, Kalie and Emma held each other close, comforting one another by Korey’s grave.
Pauline looked the worst of all, holding a small bouquet of wild flowers limply in her hand. Rocky was all she had, so hers would be a tough row to hoe.
Steven read a short passage from John 11. “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
Danny half listened to Steven’s memorial message, but he couldn’t stop his mind from wandering. He held Alisa’s hand tightly, glad that it had not been his beloved that they were burying this day, and feeling a little ashamed for thinking such a thought.
“Ichabod,” he said, just above a whisper. Despite the losses, he and the surviving members of the compound had been victorious against the assailants who attacked them. They had stood the test, held their ground, and defended what was theirs, but as he looked around at the suffering and the carnage all about him, he certainly saw no glory in it. And with a mantle of grief hanging over the compound, both for the lives lost during this assault and for the brutality that was sure to come, there would be no glory any time soon.
Don’t Panic!
Inevitably, books like this will wake folks up to the need to be prepared, or cause those of us who are already prepared to take inventory of our preparations. New preppers can find the task of getting prepared for an economic collapse, EMP, or societal breakdown to be a source of great anxiety. It shouldn’t be. By following an organized plan and setting a goal of getting a little more prepared each day, you can do it.
I always try to include a few prepper tips in my novels, but they’re fiction and not a comprehensive plan to get prepared. Now that you’re motivated to start prepping, the last thing I want to do is leave you frustrated, not knowing what to do next. So, I’d like to offer you a free PDF copy of The Seven Step Survival Plan.
For the new prepper, The Seven Step Survival Plan provides a blueprint that prioritizes the different aspects of preparedness and breaks them down into achievable goals. For seasoned preppers who often get overweight in one particular area of preparedness, The Seven Step Survival Plan provides basic guidelines to help keep their plan in balance, and ensures they’re not missing any critical segments of a well-adjusted survival strategy.
