by Susan Leigh Carlton

For the next five days, Carter made the trip to the Lazy J to check on Carrie and her son. He had to admonish her about lifting the baby. He said, “Either Maude or Case should be bringing the baby to you.

“Did you decide on a name?” he asked Carrie.

“Yes, we did. We’ve given him your name. You saved his life, and mine. We never want to forget it. He’s Case Palmer Jamison.”

“I’m honored, Carrie, but are you sure you want to hang a name like that on him?”

“We are sure,” Case said, We would be pleased to call you friend, ourselves.”

“I’m doubly honored,” Carter said. He extended his hand. “Friend.

“I need to get back to town. Carrie, no lifting. I’m proud of my sewing, so don’t you go breaking any of the stitches. You can begin getting up when you feel like it. I want you to have Case or Maude there, though, until you get your strength back.

“You’re doing fine, but I’ll be back to check you and little Case in a few days.”

“Thank you, Doctor. For everything,” Carrie said.

Case took Carter’s hand in a firm grip, his voice choked with emotion, and said, “Thank you for my wife and son. If ever you need anything, ask, and it’s yours.

As he rode back to town, Carter thought, I wish they could all turn out as well as this did. It makes what I do worthwhile.

Sitting up in bed, Carrie was writing to tell her mother and father about their grandson.

  Dear Mama and Papa,

I hope this day finds you in good health and spirits. I write to tell you about the birth of your grandson, Case Palmer Jamison.

Because of complications, he had to be delivered by Caeserean section. We are both well and are checked on by Doctor Palmer several times a week.

Mama, I am well and truly blessed. I have the most wonderful husband anyone could want, and now I have a son, born in good health.

Our ranch prospers, and I have made some true friends. I do wish you could come visit us, but I fear the trip would be too arduous for you. The stage coach portion was extremely difficult. There is talk of the railroad coming to Helena. Perhaps then…

Think of us often, and know that I think of you daily. I hope God blesses you as he has us. I love and miss you both.

  Your devoted daughter,

  Carrie

  * **

With the love of two doting parents, and a devoted housekeeper, Carter Palmer Jamison flourished. As soon as he began walking, he followed his father everywhere. To his father’s delight, the first word he uttered was “Papa”.

Carrie, Case and their son, Case were sitting in the porch swing when Carrie pointed to the sky. “Look, it’s a shooting star. It brought us luck before, I wonder what is in store for us now?”

  The End

  Epilogue

The Jamison’s had another experience with Dr. Carter Palmer following another attack by the Sioux. This event is chronicled in The Montana Doctor's Bride

Carrie and Case were not blessed with additional children due to damage caused by her surgery. After Little Case entered the Helena school system, Carrie applied for a teaching certificate. She was offered and accepted, a position teaching, She taught until her husband and son convinced her she should retire and travel.

Case Jamison and his wife Carrie lived out their lives on the Lazy J Ranch. They firmly believed Doctor Carter Palmer had saved both of them, as well as their son from an unpleasant death. They were determined he and his wife, Elizabeth would never be forgotten.

There is a shadow box frame on their living room wall that contains a Sioux arrowhead, affixed to a broken shaft. Brown stains can be seen if you examine it closely. A notation says: “Removed From The Chest Of Case Jamison by Doctor Carter Palmer”, and a date.

The Jamisons are buried in the family cemetery on the Lazy J. They lie side by side, as they lived their life, under the big skies of Montana.

Little Carter graduated from the University of Montana. He worked with his Papa until Case decided to retire.

After nearly giving up on being parents, Letty and Jack Owens were rewarded with a girl, whom they named Carrie Elizabeth after their two best friends.

  About Susan Leigh Carlton

Susan lives in a gated community just outside Tomball, a small Texas town, 26 miles northwest of Houston, with her husband, two toy poodles, Bobby and Charlie, and Lissie, the cat.

The Montana Doctor’s Bride is her latest book to be published by Amazon. She says, “The Montana Doctor’s Bride kicks off a new series, called New Brides Of Montana.

In the time setting for this book, Montana has just become a territory and is in the midst of a gold rush. There is no railroad service in all of the territory. In addition, the Indians have grown tired of the miners and settlers moving onto their lands and fight back. It is the time of what is known as Red Cloud’s War.

Susan passed through Helena many years ago, but memories fade, and if she had a bucket list, another visit would be near the top, and in particular, the area of Yellowstone. (Author’s Note: 3% of Yellowstone National Park is in Montana.)

She continues to monitor all of the reviews and comments. A real treasure comes from the emails from readers. She says “I revise my writing process and style accordingly. This is a learning process for me and I love every minute of it.”

The names of all her books are on the pages following this one.

She says, “My thanks to you readers. I appreciate your taking the time to read them. As an avid reader myself, I will read several books during the time I am writing. Our kids love to read, as does my husband. He takes his iPad with him everywhere and reads during waits for the doctor. He would take it when we go out to eat, but he knows I would do him bodily harm.

“I would like to thank those of you who cared enough to email me about the plots and the style. For someone to have the interest and take the time to email… well it makes my day. I had an email from a gentleman who lives in the area I used as the setting for “In Search Of Love”. Since I research the geographical setting of all my books, the names of the trails, creeks and towns were familiar to him.

Another reader emailed me a picture of her great-great grandfather after reading “The Widow Finds Love” which is based in part on my great-great-great grandmother and her 1888 trek from South Carolina to Utah.

“Thanks again. Now I can begin research on my next effort. If you have suggestions for additional books, I would love to hear them. Email them to me or enter them as comments on the website.”
