Loving Her Fling Page 17

by Heather B. Moore

The lights dimmed and the previews started. In the middle row, on the middle seats, West saw a couple slide down in their seats. He recognized Everly King, a frequent moviegoer and the woman who worked at the craft shop. The guy next to her was the one responsible for the new comfy seats. Austin something-or-other? The two love birds stole a kiss in the dark theater.

Even in the dim light, the love between them was clear to see. Everly looked at Austin with so much trust. There was so much adoration in her gaze, it was blinding.

West knew he would never be the one to get the princess. Westley, the hero of The Princess Bride, had been a poor farm boy. He hadn’t had a chance until he became the bad guy; the Dread Pirate Roberts. That was the true moral of the story. Princesses might take a roll in the hay with the poor farm boy. They might even allow themselves to be swept away by the bad-boy pirate. But in real life, they would always choose to marry the prince.

West averted his gaze from the couple in love. The air-conditioner kicked on and West caught a trace scent of the bitter popcorn that used to permeate the air. No, no one had ever looked at him like Everly was gazing at Austin.

Sure, some women in town looked at him with desire. He was constantly dodging Gentry Martin and her cougar claws. Women like her just wanted to take a bite out of him. No one had ever caressed his cheek like he mattered. And, with his reputation, he doubted anyone ever would.

West is about to be proven very wrong.
