“As long as it takes,” Sandy said. “Maybe another year.”
Gretchen leaned forward.
“Once we’ve stopped seeing you regularly, will we be able to call on you for help if we need it, if we get into trouble?” Gretchen asked.
“Of course,” Sandy said.
“Long-term?” Gretchen asked.
Long-term? Where did that come from? What did Gretchen want?
Damn it, Sandy thought. She could feel her eyes going soft. She couldn’t stop it.
She realized what Gretchen wanted. A burst of love swept through her. What marriage counselor can remain impartial?
Gretchen had tears at the corners of her blue eyes, which made them sparkle in the afternoon light.
Oh, honey, if only I could make you see how cool you are, how much power you have, Sandy thought.
“I’m good for the long term,” Sandy said. “I’m good with forever.”
