“Yes, but even at the edges, the ward will reduce their powers and compromise them.” A frown burrowed his brow. “That’s what makes this very unusual. Demons do not like to make themselves vulnerable. And before you ask, Jack, I’m sure I don’t know what it means that a demon suddenly chose to cross into the dead zone. We’ve alerted all the slayer families of the breach, so they can be extra vigilant. Flynn…” His brow cleared, but his gaze was still very intense and serious. “Do you have any trips planned this holiday?”
Flynn shook his head.
“Excellent. Little Rislin really is the safest place to be right now, especially for you.”
“Ah!” Ice practically jumped in her excitement. “That demon was going after Flynn, then, wasn’t he, Sir?”
“Flynn doesn’t come from a traditional slayer family,” was all Mr. Swan said. “His parents aren’t able to provide the necessary protection outside the dead zone. Now, I have some business to conclude,” he told them as he turned to leave, “but we’ll have a good six hours in the car tomorrow to dissect the matter to our heart’s content. I’m especially eager for a first hand account of all the details.”
There was a long moment of silence after the door closed behind him. Flynn had no idea what thoughts were consuming Jack and Ice. For himself, he was particularly worried about six hours in a car with his headmaster. That wouldn’t be awkward. Not at all.
Jack stirred himself, actually separated from the armchair to come stand closer. “About this monster you killed! What exactly did it look like?”
“I didn’t kill it,” Flynn reminded him. “I told you, it impaled—”
“Yeah, but that’s not the version Milo’s going to hear.”
“Milo’s not going to hear any version,” Ice declared, resuming her seat on the end of his bed. She sent Jack a warning look. “We promised Flynn we’d keep mum about his pledge.”
Jack whined somewhat about that (they hadn’t actually promised), and Ice ignored him, and Flynn knew, without a doubt, that his secret was safe with both of them. With these two for friends, one really couldn’t go wrong, could you? He’d be seeing Toby and Rose the day after tomorrow, and his mom would never know he’d almost died. And he had a long summer to enjoy before he had to worry about demons again.
Life was pretty darn perfect.
For now.
