So there she was, staked and chained, unable to do anything to free herself. She had no idea what the vampires had in store for her. It wasn’t as if they could kill her. The only thing that had worried her was what they could possibly do to Devin. Her vampire relatives had to know she and Devin had become close, had to have had her watched, and seen where she’d been over the course of a week.
If anything happened to Devin, she’d never forgive herself. As she sat in that basement for hours with nothing to do but think, Kaisa came to terms with the fact she’d gone and fallen in love with another human male. She could finally admit that he’d started to claim a piece of her heart from the very first day they’d met.
The car came to a stop. Kaisa pushed thoughts of Devin aside, needing her full attention on what would happen next. The trunk opened, and one of the vamps roughly pulled her out of it. She looked around as two of them grabbed her by an arm and dragged her away. She instantly recognized where they were. They were parked at the side of the road near the grain elevator, close to the spot where Devin had found the body of the dead woman.
They dragged her toward the parking lot of the elevator where Torger’s car sat parked. He and Brolach climbed out and then came to stand in the middle of large open space. The vamps came to a stop a few yards in front of her brothers.
“Let Kaisa go,” Brolach said with a growl.
The vampire who didn’t hold her stepped forward. “No. You two will give yourselves over to us. Your kind should never have been allowed to exist. We will rectify that.”
Torger shook his head and laughed with no humor. “You’re an arrogant bastard, aren’t you? Didn’t you learn two thousand years ago that we can’t be killed? You tried to end Brolach’s life, yet here he is. You burned our mother’s body, yet Kaisa and I were born in her ashes. The reason you dislike hybrids so much is the fact we’re stronger than you. We’re true immortals. You aren’t.”
If Torger had wanted to goad them into going on the attack, he’d said the right thing to make it happen. Two of the vamps launched themselves at Brolach and Torger. The third only hissed, but kept a firm hold on Kaisa. Staked and chained, there wasn’t a damn thing she could do to help her brothers.
As they met and struck out against the two vampires, she growled, hating the feeling of being helpless. So focused on the fight in front of her, Kaisa almost lost her balance as the vamp who held her was torn from her side. She looked around to find Devin had a hold of him from behind, the vampire’s head wrenched back. Devin opened his mouth, flashing a set of fangs he hadn’t had that morning.
He easily held the struggling vampire. “I’ll get you free of those chains once I take care of this piece of garbage.”
Devin sank his fangs into the vamp’s neck and tore out his throat. Blood sprayed. He drank it, then once he had his fill, he ripped the vampire’s head clean off his body before tossing it away.
Kaisa could only stare at Devin. He was a vampire. And god, he was hottest thing she’d ever seen. He’d been strong before, but now that he’d been turned, his muscles looked even more pronounced.
He crossed to her and easily broke the locks to her chains. As the links fell to the ground, he ripped out the stake in her chest. Kaisa sucked in a sharp breath at the sudden pain and stumbled. Devin caught her and held her close.
“You okay?” he asked as he kissed the top of her head.
“Yes.” She pulled back to look at him. “Who?”
“Torger. They figured it was better he do it since he’s your twin. We can talk about this later. Let’s help your brothers clean up the rest of the trash.”
Brolach and Torger had no problem standing up to the two remaining vampires, but with Kaisa’s and Devin’s help, the vamps didn’t have a chance of winning. They soon lost their heads as the other had.
They all stood with the dead at their feet, panting. Kaisa had a hard time taking her gaze off Devin. There was something definitely feral about him now. Something that Waverly and Rikki hadn’t gotten after the second blood exchange. Nor had Kaisa’s female friend, the human she’d turned many years ago. Devin was the first male to become a day walker. Maybe that had something to do with it.
Torger ran his gaze over Devin. “Shit, man. You’ve turned out to be bloodthirsty. I didn’t know you had it in you.”
Devin put his arm around Kaisa’s shoulders and pulled her up against his side. “They took what is mine. Kaisa is mine to protect. No one tries to hurt her and lives.”
Kaisa sucked in a breath at Devin’s words. Was he? Brolach spoke before she could say anything.
“Ah, Devin,” her older brother said. “Do you have this almost overwhelming urge to protect Kaisa? That she’s yours and that you don’t know if you could survive without her?”
Devin seemed to think for a few seconds, then nodded. “It’s exactly like that. As soon as I saw Kaisa with those vamps, it took everything in me to stay hidden as we’d planned and not rush to her.”
Torger looked at Kaisa. “Well, sis, you got what you wanted. Your human turned vampire recognizes you as his mate.”
“Is that true?” Devin asked as he turned his gaze on her.
Kaisa smiled. “Yes. That’s what a male vampire feels once he meets his mate. And god forbid anyone who gets in his way.”
Devin wrapped her in his embrace. “I need to be alone with you. Now.”
Torger chuckled. “I’ll drive you to Devin’s place since Cameron is at home with the servant, who will no longer be one.” He looked at Brolach. “You going to be okay starting to clean up this mess until I get back?”
Brolach nodded. “Of course. Take them home.”
* * * *
Kaisa stood with Devin at the front door of his place and watched Torger drive away. Once he disappeared from sight, she turned to her mate. She still wanted to pinch herself over the fact that he truly was hers. The months that she’d tried to push him away since he’d been human had all been a waste of time she could have had with him. If only she’d listened to him in the beginning and turned him.
She met Devin’s gaze. “I’m sorry.”
He smiled. “For what?”
“For trying to keep you at arm’s length. I let a past relationship that happened so very long ago almost come between us. I knew you wanted to be turned. I should have done it, taken the gamble that you could have been my mate. Now it turns out you are.”
Devin rested his forehead against hers. “That doesn’t matter. It worked out in the end.” He picked her up. “I’m going to clean up, then we’ll make this mate thing official.”
She had no problem with that. He unlocked the door before he carried her inside. He didn’t stop walking until he reached his bedroom. He placed her on the bed, then stripped out of his clothes. He was already full aroused. She licked her lips.
Devin groaned. “This is when I’m very thankful for vampire speed.”
He darted away, the shower ran for a few seconds, then he was back. The blood on his face was gone, and his hair was damp from being washed. He smelled like the soap he’d used.
Devin would have climbed onto the bed with her, but Kaisa held up her hand to stop him and went to stand in front of him. “Let me check out this new body of yours.”
“Take your clothes off first,” he said huskily.
Kaisa quickly complied. Once she was naked, she ran her fingertips down his chest. “I had no idea you’d be this strong once you were turned.”
“It was a nice surprise. I felt strong after Torger turned me, but over a period of an hour, I kind of got muscles on top of muscles. Your brothers think because I’m male, and that I had two blood exchanges with two hybrids, might be the reason, which is just a guess.”
“I’m not complaining. It just means I have to learn your body all over again.”
Kaisa went on tiptoes and kissed Devin. Her fangs dropped, and so did his. They scraped against her lips, which caused her to shudder in pleasure. Once they were both breathing
heavily, she dragged her fangs along his neck and down to his chest. He moaned.
She continued downward until she ended up on her knees in front of his hard cock. Her pussy throbbed as arousal surged through her. She licked the moisture that leaked from his slit before she carefully took him inside her mouth. She sucked him almost to the back of her throat. He moaned louder.
She took his cock in and out until he pulled on her arm to stand. Kaisa was more than ready to take him inside her body. She ached for him. She ached to have him sink his fangs into her along with his shaft.
Kaisa thought Devin would put her on the bed, but he had other plans. He lifted her and placed her legs around his waist as he braced his feet on the floor. He reached between them, fisted his cock, then led it to her slick opening. With a thrust of his hips, he buried his length inside her pussy.
In a show of strength, he held her by the bottom and lifted her on and off his cock. All she could do was hold on to his shoulders. He continued to slide in and out of her as he buried his face in the crook of her neck. Kaisa turned her head to the side, knowing exactly what he wanted.
“Do it,” she said on a moan. “Bite me. Make me yours. I love you, Devin.”
He groaned. “God, I love you too. I can’t hold back any longer. I have to taste you.
She threaded her fingers into his hair to hold him to her. He sank his fangs into her as her body coiled tighter, an orgasm building deep inside her. As he drank, it tore through her, stealing her breath.
Once it was over, Devin licked her skin to heal his bite. He continued to spear in and out of her as she sank her fangs into his neck. He bellowed with pleasure, and his cock pulsed deep inside her pussy.
Devin carried her to the bed and slowly laid her down, keeping their bodies joined. They were now mated. The bond had formed between them. He was now forever hers. And to think, if she’d had her way, she would have missed out on the best thing to ever happen to her. The vamps who’d killed her parents were no longer a threat. Kaisa could now enjoy life to the fullest with her mate.
