“No, I just thought you needed to hear this.”

  “What is it?”

“An hour ago, we received a phone call from an unidentified male. He insisted on speaking to you. Obviously staff told him you weren’t on shift but they would take a message.”

He heard Ethan clear his throat.

  “And?”

“Okay, so he tells us that he has the man responsible for the murders of the Green Bank Five, and a confession to prove it. And get this… he said he was calling from that pay phone, you know the old rusted one in Green Bank... and…”

  “Are you serious?”

“I know, right? Now had I taken the call I might have hung up and written it off as a prank but Shelly on the front desk called it in. We had an officer up that way so we had them swing by.”

Larson swallowed hard. Up until that point they were treating the Green Bank Five as part of the same case with the Gance brothers, even though Merle kept denying any involvement in the deaths of the five women or Jenna Whitmore. No one believed him. He was notorious for telling lies.

“Anyway, the officer shows up and guess what he found.”

  Ethan paused for effect.

“Spit it out, Ethan,” Larson said growing frustrated.

“Corey Whitmore hog-tied, and a voice recorder with him confessing to the murder of the five women and his sister. And here’s the thing, Corey didn’t even deny it. The guy was scared shitless. Pissed his pants and everything. He just wanted the officer to take him.”

  “You’re kidding me?”

He tried to catch his breath as his pulse was beginning to race. Kerry looked over at him with a concerned expression and mouthed the words: You okay? He nodded and waved her off.

“But that’s not the weird part. The voice recorder was taped to the inside of the pay phone. So they play it and get this… As well as Corey’s confession, there is someone else’s voice on that recording. You remember that guy we brought in, the one who broke into Jenna’s place, the one who was involved in the bar brawl and…”

“The one who escaped your custody,” Larson added, ribbing him over that.

  “Okay, okay, that’s not funny.”

Larson cracked a smile. “I kind of thought it was.”

“Yeah, yeah, anyway it was him, Sam. The same guy — Jack Winchester.”

Larson let out a lungful of air and cracked a smile even though it pained him to do so. He nodded a few times, exchanged a few more words with Ethan before hanging up and then leaning back in his seat.

  “Well I’ll be damned.”
