“Can a god use another god’s sphere?”
“Serpens is dead; he doesn’t have any claim on it anymore. There’s enough power in it to get us through the celestial tunnels. From there, I’ll be able to get us home.”
“And what then?” asked Charlie.
“I have a score to settle with Crosseyes, and I need to contact the others. Not everyone who fled the demis is insane, so we need to get everyone together.”
Charlie nodded. “We better go,” he said.
He gave one glance at Longtooth, at the rat who’d joined Charlie because he wanted an adventure, his friend who had met his end when he got wrapped up in something that was less an adventure, and more a nightmare. Guilt coiled in his chest, and it felt too heavy for him to hold in.
He looked at Flink now. If something happened to her, the weight would be too much.
“Flink,”” he said. “We gave you a choice on Crosseyes ship, and you were going to ask to go home. Well, now’s our choice. Larynk can get you home. Right, Larynk?”
He nodded. “There’s enough power for that.”
“Just tell me what you want, Flink. Because if something happens to you, I won’t be able to take it knowing I dragged you along.”
Flink looked up at the sky, where the black clouds had darkened even more, where space itself seemed to stream in to the planet as the demis and their convoy of galactic ship breached the skies, dozens of them, all shapes and sizes, smooth and dark like monoliths.
She kneeled and picked up her spear and held it firm. “I can’t leave,” she said.
That was that. It was all she needed to say, and truth be told, Charlie was glad.
As Larynk gathered power in his new sphere, Charlie gave one last look at Longtooth and the wound on his side. He touched his own chest, felt the crusted blood and jagged edges of his ripped flesh.
Larynk had brought him into the games of the gods, but Charlie had his place in it now. He asked himself the same question he’d asked Flink; if Larynk offered him the chance to go home now, would he take it?
No. Earth was gone now, his home was gone, and there was nothing waiting for him back there. He’d see this game through until he won or lost.
