Granny B watched Lou mother Bill. “Bill, it looks like you’re in good hands. That wound took some of my best stitching I’ve ever done. Those wolves did a number on your leg. Keep taking the antibiotics, and you might live. Lou, how was Greta doing when you left today?”
Lou smiled. “Colt is keeping her busy. Alan has to stay after them to get their work done. Young love is so grand to watch.”
Granny looked at Lou wiping Bill’s brow for the tenth time. “Old love ain’t bad either.”
Rick said, “I’ll bet Greta will be begging to bring Colt’s family down here to the bunker.”
Tom said. “I think we’ll need to move everyone to the bunker this winter. It will be impossible to cut enough wood to heat the cabins, and the smoke from a fire would pollute our lungs at the cave. The cave must be a last resort. I asked our wood-cutting team to stock up on wood at the cave and here at the ranch. It’s already colder than a well digger’s ass out there. Today’s heatwave at forty degrees was an anomaly. The pond has frozen over several times, and the wind cuts like a knife. We’ll have a foot of snow any day.”
Jackie said, “That heatwave probably saved your asses. If you’d came out of that water a day earlier, you’d have frozen to death before we brought you back to the bunker.”
Tom’s eyes grew, and he looked around the room. “I know.”
Granny B said, “Those eighty-inch TVs and movies will help with the boredom, and I’ve had the ladies dust off all of your grandpa’s board games. I also have told our cooks to start a crash program to develop tasty rabbit and corn recipes. We'll run out of our survival supplies by the end of winter, if we don’t use them sparingly.”
Tom’s head snapped around to his grandmother. “We had enough food to last the family for three years. Crap!”
Granny B said, “Grandpa never thought we’d take on so many people. Tom, you’ve done a great job leading us. Think about what Jerry, Bill, and Kate have brought to us in innovation, and how many times they have helped save our butts. We’ll survive, even if we have to eat rabbit and cornbread every day until the crops come in in the summer and fall.”
Kate had been quiet. “We’ve survived thanks to Tom’s leadership, Granny’s survival knowledge, and the addition of good people with skills that complement our base crew’s knowledge. We have all winter to decide what direction to go in in the future, and plenty of time to make plans. I predict this will be a long boring winter, and that’s exactly what our worn-out team needs.”
Tom nodded. “I’ll drink to that.”
Rick looked Sam in the eyes. “We have to quickly find out who the spies are and who tried to kill you and Kate up at the pond.”
Tom pondered what to say then said, “I’ll think up some kind of trap. We’ll catch them. I’ll shoot them in the back of the head. Piece of cake.”
Everyone’s eyes snapped toward Tom, who just had a wicked grin on his face. Sam gulped and looked down at her lap.

About the Author
AJ Newman is the author of 36 science fiction and mystery novels plus 9 audiobooks that have been published on Amazon and Audible. He was born and raised in a small town in the western part of Kentucky. His Dad taught him how to handle guns very early in life, and he and his best friend Mike spent summers shooting .22 rifles and fishing.
Reading is his passion, and he read every book he could get his hands on. He fell in love with science fiction. He graduated from USI with a degree in Chemistry. He made a career working in manufacturing and logistics, but he always fancied himself as an author.
AJ served six years in the Army National Guard in an armored unit and spent six years performing every function on M48 and M60 army tanks. This gave him great respect for our veterans who lay their lives on the line to protect our country and freedoms.
AJ currently resides in Henderson, Kentucky, with his wife Patsy and their four tiny Shih Tzu’s, Sammy, Cotton, Callie, and Benny. All except Benny are rescue dogs.
