“This might surprise you, but I’ve been in love with you since that weekend in Bahodir. I walked away because I couldn’t handle it.”
“Do you want to walk away now?”
“No,” she said, serious now. “And I would be honored to become your wife. As long as your happy being married to a woman who has absolutely no idea where she belongs in this world now.”
“You belong with me,” he said and kissed her. People milled around them, paying them no mind. As if it were normal to see people confessing their love in the middle of the sidewalk in the middle of the day.
Everything fell into place with that kiss. The past washed clean, the future hopeful. Kell hugged her against him. He was never letting her go again.
They had found their forever.
Epilogue
Cedar Falls, Michigan
Frank Wolff sat down next to his wife in the Adirondack chairs she’d insisted they buy for the patio to match the ones on the dock. He wouldn’t admit it, but he loved those damn chairs. They were solid and strong. Capable of bearing any burden placed on them. Kind of like his family. Even among tragedy they were able to go on and stay strong.
He looked out in the yard where his boys, Bailey, Avery, Macy and Shea stood in lines, involved in a hard core football game. Kell was already bleeding from the wound on his leg and shoulder and his nose where Chris had elbowed him during a pass from Quinn. They had laughed it off and clapped each other on the back. As always, competitive but good sports. His boys knew how to play hard, took their licks, and didn’t hold grudges.
The girls were starting to hold their own, too. Even Shea who had just recently become part of the family. They all knew the hell she’d put Kell through four years ago, but his boys didn’t hold a grudge. Frank respected that. They’d accepted Shea as one of their own the second Kell brought her home. She had one hell of a story to tell, yet, her eyes were haunted. Sometimes he’d catch her staring off with a lost look. Losing a child did that to you. He was testament of that. Not a day went by he didn’t miss his youngest son.
Shea, on the other hand, had a long ways to go. She had demons from her past to battle, but Frank knew his son Kell was the perfect person to help her fight. Together, they would make it.
That is, if they could keep Shea off her feet so she could heal. The woman was made of steel with the way she played the game, limping as she ran, clutching her side when she twisted wrong. She was damn stubborn and it made him smile. Kell had definitely met his match.
As a family they were beginning to heal. Especially now that the bastard responsible for Ryan was dead. And good riddance. Frank wished it had been his hand that pulled the trigger, but he was satisfied someone else had.
He watched Quinn hike the ball to Shea who let out a triumphant cry as she caught it in the air and took three steps over the goal line. Everyone laughed when she did a little jig.
Yes, his family was going to be all right.
