  Chapter 1

I remember the first time I heard the voice. It was shortly after my 18th birthday and I was at school. It was like any other day. I wish I could have known that that day would change my life forever. I'm still not exactly sure what happened. I remember most of the day up until the event. The rest I've been told.

To explain it all I should probably start on the Monday before. My family and I celebrated my 18th birthday that saturday. It had been a great weekend. My Mom, Diane, had invited over the entire family. My Dad, Travis, had grilled as he always did. There was so much joy and love that day. I try to hold onto those memories. I try to remember what it felt like when I was loved and wanted by my family. Since the incident, they have written me off. They've rarely visited me at the mental institution. Guess they didn't want an insane person as their daughter. I'm sure they would have never adopted me had they known what would happen.

Anyways, the day started out fine. My Mom woke me up. “Caroline, honey! Time to get up! I made pancakes!” Yum. One of my favorites. Who doesn't love fluffy pancakes?? So many things I miss about my life before.

I quickly got dressed putting on a red fitted T-shirt and jeans that had holes in the knees and threw my long blonde hair into a high ponytail. This was my usual style. Simple. Comfortable. I was never the girl who primped in front of a mirror for hours. I didn't wear makeup except for special occasions.

I walked to school that day by myself. My friend, Lacey, had stayed home sick that day. Lacey and I had been best friends since second grade. If I'm being honest, Lacey was my only friend. It's not that I didn't want more friends. I just had a hard time relating to most of the girls at my school. All they cared about were boys and status. Neither of those things interested me. But Lacey was different. We were both kinda sporty. Lacey and I loved to go on long runs together. In fact, I was probably the only person who could beat Lacey in a race. She was the star of the track team and was always telling me I should try out but I really didn't like the attention the athletes got so I never did. Lacey was very focused on her sport so she didn't pay much attention to the boys at school either, though they definitely noticed her. Lacey was gorgeous. She was tall and tan with jet black hair and golden eyes. You'd have to be blind not to notice her. But she was never vain about her looks. It was like she didn't even know how beautiful she was. I always felt plain compared to her. I was tall and tan too. But I had blue eyes and blonde hair. All too common. While Lacey looked wild and exotic, I felt common and mundane in comparison. She turned heads but I was happy not to be noticed. It was easier that way.

When I arrived at school that day, I was hoping for an easy day. I hated when Lacey stayed home. No one to eat lunch with. No one to talk to on the way to and from school. I was alone. In a school full of other people, I had no one. I just wanted to get through the day as fast as possible.

My first class went smoothly enough. Nothing ever happened in English class. Chemistry 2 was my next class and I hated it. It wasn't the class that I hated so much. It was having the same class as Malorie Andrews. Malorie Andrews was the epitome of everything I hated about other girls. Mean and petty, she thought she ruled the school but all she really did was terrorize anyone who didn't fit in her clique. And I was her favorite victim. At least this was senior year, I thought. Not much longer and I'd never have to see Malorie again. Word was she had got into a party school in California. Not really sure which, I didn't care. But I had heard her talking about a sorority that her Mom had been in and that she would be joining too.

Then she noticed me in class and that's when the day went downhill.

Immediately she zeroed in on me and the bullying started.

“Hey, loser. Where's your girlfriend today?” She said snidely while her hord of clones giggled behind their hands. This was a common attack of hers. Since Lacey and I weren't dating half the school, like her and her minions did, she had decided to label us as gay. Lacey was always quick to put her in her place but Malorie knew I never did. So without Lacey there, she always pounced on me. I chose not to respond to her question which apparently pissed her off.

“Hey, I am talking to you dike!” She shouted. The entire class silenced as they strained to hear what was happening. And that was the first time I heard the voice.

“This bitch is going to die if she keeps talking to us that way.” I heard the voice so clearly I was shocked. I looked around the room to see if anyone else heard it but no one seemed to. It almost seemed as if it was my own thought but I knew it wasn't. I wasn't a violent person. I hated conflict. I usually just ignored Malorie so where did this thought come from? It was like someone was in my head. “Oh God.” I thought “I must be going crazy. I'm hearing freaking voices. Great.”

Malorie must have noticed my troubled expression but thought I was upset about what she said, which only made her bolder. She didn
't usually get a reaction from me and saw this as a chance to get under my skin.

“It's ok Lesbo. I'm sure your girlfriend will be back. Unless she doesn't want you either. I mean who would want a pathetic loser like you!?” She taunted.

“Loser!? Us!? This bitch is going to lose a limb” the voice said angrily inside my head. My hands started shaking. Now I was getting really nervous. Not because of what Malorie was saying. I didn't care about her. But what was happening to me? I felt out of control. Again, Malorie misread my expression and carried on with her attack.

“Awwww, are you going to cry? So sad!? Poor little lesbo can't handle a little teasing. Haha. Pathetic weakling.” She said scathingly. She laughed and her friends joined in her snickering. Just then the teacher entered the room and finally Malorie was silenced.

The rest of the day went pretty smoothly. Thankfully the only class I had with Malorie was chemistry. I stayed away from her at lunch and ate out in the courtyard by myself. At the end of the day I walked home alone again.

Once I got home I called Lacey.

“Hey girl! Miss me today?” She asked

“Oh, my God. So much!” I replied. “Please tell me you will be at school tomorrow!” I pleaded.

“Malorie bothering you again?” Lacey guessed.

“Yes, we're gay. Blah, blah, blah.”

“I'll be there tomorrow. Let her try that shit with me. You really need to stand up to her Carrie. I know you could take her.” Lacey was right. I should. I knew I should. But it just wasn't in me.

“I know, Lace. I know. But when she starts, I just freeze up. One day I will stand up to her. I will.” I stammered.

  Chapter 2

The next day I shot up with a spring in my step. I was sure it was going to be a better day. Lacey would be at school and I always felt stronger with her by my side. I got up, put on a baby blue tee and threw on some skinny jeans and flats. I threw my hair up in a high ponytail and ran downstairs. I quickly ate a bowl of cereal and grabbed my backpack and headed down the street. Lacey lived a few houses down the block and was waiting outside for me.

While walking to school I told Lacey about the day before. I told her about the things that Malorie had said and warned her the attacks would most likely continue into today. But when I got to the part of the story where I had heard the voice, I hesitated. Would Lacey think I was crazy? Was I crazy? Lacey saw my look as I considered whether or not to tell her about the voice. She immediately knew something was wrong. She knew all my looks and could read me better than anyone.

“Is there something else Carrie? What's wrong?” She asked, looking concerned.

“Uhhh, Well, I… uh, I….” How could I tell her this. It sounded nuts.

“Carrie, you know you can tell me anything. I love you like a sister. I'll never judge you.” She said comfortingly.

“Ok.” Here it goes. Please don't think I'm insane, I thought. “Yesterday when Malorie was being nasty, I…. I heard a…. voice…” I finally forced out the words. Lacey looked momentarily surprised but quickly recovered.

“A voice? What kind of voice?”

“I don't know. It was like a thought but it wasn't MY thought if that makes any sense.” I blurted.

“Did anyone else hear it?” She asked

“No, I don't think so. I looked around and it didn't seem like it” I was looking away feeling uncomfortable now. Did she think I had lost it.I was starting to think maybe I had.

“What did the voice say?” She asked

Oh shit. This wasn't going to make it any better. “It was mad...about the way Malorie was talking to me. It said 'this bitch is gonna die' “ I looked down in shame but Lacey wasn't even phased

”Well, I like this voice. You need to defend yourself against Malorie. She's a horrible bully and needs to be put in her place.” She replied as if hearing voices was totally normal. I sighed in relief. I could always count on Lacey to support me. She was my rock.

Before I knew it I was in first period. Another uneventful class reading Shakespeare's Sonnets. Boring. Then second period rolled around. Chemistry 2. Here we go again…. At least today Lacey would be with me.

As I walked into class I immediately heard Malorie's group erupt into a fit of giggles and I felt the blood rush to my face. I didn't know if they were laughing about me but I knew the jabs would be starting soon.

Lacey walked into the room and as predicted, Malorie began.

“Awwww, the lovers are together today! How sweet!” She cooed.

Lacey wasted no time. “Malorie, go get bent” She retorted.

Malorie glared at her before saying “Lacey, have you ever even dated a boy? Or is Caroline your only lover?” She snickered.

“Malorie, is there any boy in this school you haven't slept with? Or have they all gotten a ride.” Lacey gave Malorie a smug smile and sat down as the teacher walked in. I could tell Malorie was seething. Lacey had the last word and Malorie had no time to retort.

The class went by quickly. Lacey and I got to be lab partners while working on an experiment. One more period until lunch!

I met Lacey outside of the cafeteria and we walked in together. Tuesday was always pizza, one of the few edible meals they served. We both grabbed a slice and found a spot at a table. We were chatting and eating when our lunch was suddenly interrupted. Malorie was back for more.

“Hey Dikes!” She chirped. Her squad giggled. Lacey rolled her eyes.

“Malorie, move on. I've had enough of your shit today. Leave me and Carrie alone, or else!”

“Ooohhhh…. Or else what!? Huh? Are you threatening me lesbo? I'm so scared!” Malorie mocked Lacey.

“Actually, yes I am.” Lacey replied. She stood up and got into Malorie's face. My jaw hit the floor. She had never confronted Malorie this way and I was both awed and impressed. Malorie looked intimidated. Lacey was at least 5'9” while Malorie was only 5'2” or so. Lacey towered over her making her warning clear.

“Move on. Leave us the hell alone” Lacey demanded.

Malorie glared but walked away. I let out a sigh of relief glad it was over. I really hated confrontation.

Lacey and I had gone back to eating our lunch when suddenly she screamed. Malorie and her friends had filled a large cup with chocolate milk and poured it all over Lacey's head. Lacey's hair and shirt were completely soaked with milk. The entire cafeteria erupted into laughter and Lacey was livid. She looked around and saw all the laughing faces and her anger was quickly replaced by humiliation. She ran out of the cafeteria without saying a word.

I was shocked and horrified. I couldn't believe Malorie would take it that far. My hands started shaking and I heard the voice again. “THAT FUCKING BITCH!” I turned and looked at Malorie to see her smirking at me and I blacked out.

  Chapter 3

When I regained consciousness, it took me a minute to figure out where I was. I opened my eyes and was immediately blinded by fluorescent lights. When my eyes adjusted I realized I was in a hospital bed. I looked around the room and saw my Mother napping on the couch. I didn't see my Dad. He must have stepped out. Lacey was sitting in a chair looking at the floor. I was puzzled when I saw a tear roll down her cheek.

“Lacey” I croaked. Her face immediately shot up. She looked upset. Was she worried about me? What happened?

“Carrie!” She stammered. “ I…. I'm so sorry.” She said as she burst into sobs. I wanted to comfort her but at that moment I realized I couldn't move my hands. My arms and feet were in restraints.

“What's going on!?” I yelled, starting to panic.

“What happened? Why am I in restraints? Mom!!” I was losing it at that point. I was terrified. When my Mom heard me cry out for her she woke up and looked at me and rushed out of the room. She didn't even say a word to me.

“Mom!” I screamed. “Help me! Take these off!” Lacey sat down as her sobbing continued.

“I'm so sorry Carrie.” She kept whispering through her sobs. Sorry for what, I thought, bu
t was too panicked to even voice the question. Then my Mom came rushing back into the room with a Doctor.

“See! She's awake!” She said as if the Doctor hadn't believed her.

The Doctor looked at me first with shock then his face changed. I wasn't sure what his expression meant at that time. Now I realize it was pity. He knew what was about to happen. He went about examining me. Asking me to look this way and that while he checked my vitals and such.

“Please take these off!” I pleaded, referring to the restraints.

“I'm sorry Miss Phillips. I can't. Not until you've been evaluated.”

“ Evaluated!? By who?” I was nearly shouting. “What happened!? Someone tell me something!” I could feel my eyes starting to tear up. Lacey rushed out of the room, still crying. My Mom looked uncomfortable but came to stand beside me.

“Calm down Caroline. Honey, do you remember what happened yesterday?” She asked, taking my captive hand in hers.

“Yesterday? I've been out for an entire day?” I asked.

She nodded. “Do you remember what happened?” She persisted.

I furrowed my brow, willing myself to remember.

“I remember being in the lunch room with Lacey. Malorie was being nasty, as usual. She poured milk all over Lacey. Mom, it was horrible!!” I said. She nodded. Her eyes started to well up.

“Do you remember what happened after that?” She asked.

“No. Did I pass out or something? I remember being there and next thing I knew I was waking up here.” I was so confused.

My Mom looked clearly uncomfortable and didn't seem to want to say more.

“No, honey. You didn't pass out. You attacked Malorie.” Tears were running down her face now.

“No. I wouldn't. Come on Mom! You know me! I wouldn't do something like that!”

“There were witnesses, Carrie. A lot of them. The entire cafeteria saw it. You attacked her. Teachers saw what was happening and stepped in before you did any serious damage but they said you were in a rage. You were calling Malorie names. Threatening her. Telling her you would rip her throat out. It took four teachers to hold you down.” She turned away. I could see the shame on her face.
