“And Becky. She escaped from you.”
“I’ll find her. Becky Delaney proved herself unworthy.”
Behind him the kitchen door crashed open. Though Treadwell managed one wild shot, Flynn was on top of him. He ripped the gun from Treadwell’s fist and knocked him unconscious with one punch to the psychiatrist’s perfectly tanned jaw.
Becky came in the door behind him. The first words out of her mouth were, “I’m sorry.”
“No need,” Flynn assured her. His voice was a harsh rasp. He was covered with grit from the fire. “I’m glad you were here when I needed you.”
Becky smiled shyly at Marisa. “I pulled Flynn out of the fire.”
“Saved my life,” he agreed, looking at Marisa.
He stood and held out his arms. Marisa had never been so relieved, so glad to be embraced. They would never be apart again. Never.
   Epilogue
Back in San Francisco, Marisa stood outside the Two Dragons Restaurant, waiting for Flynn. Around her, the Chinatown street bustled with activity and noise. She missed the quiet of Mesa Verde.
Though Flynn had moved into her apartment, the arrangement was temporary until they sorted out their careers. Right now, he was at FBI headquarters, about to receive his next assignment.
She spotted him crossing the street, and her heart lifted. Though he’d abandoned his jeans and boots for a summer-weight gray suit, there was still something of the cowboy in his stride.
He slung an arm around her shoulder, kissed her forehead and said, “Quantico.”
   “Is that your new assignment?”
“I’ll be teaching investigative procedure at Quantico.” He kissed her again. “And there’s a similar position for you. If you’re interested.”
She still hadn’t decided whether or not she’d stay with the FBI. “A teaching position? No fieldwork?”
   “None.”
   “Where would we live?”
“I’m thinking of a house outside town. Might be a bit of a commute, but worth it.” Another little kiss. “And, of course, the property would be in both our names.”
   “Of course.”
   “Mister and Missus.”
He looked down and she followed his gaze. He held a diamond ring between his fingers. He was proposing more than joint ownership of a house in the country.
“I love you, Marisa. Marry me.”
This was a huge decision. There were so many other things to consider. She needed to think, to weigh all the alternatives. “I don’t know what to say.”
   “Go with your gut instinct.”
As she looked into his eyes, she knew. Flynn was the man she wanted to spend her life with, the man she’d loved and lost and loved again. “Yes. My answer is yes.”
In his embrace, she was home. Safe and secure. Forever.
