There, he'd said it.
Nods from all around made him smile.
"Will you bring us to America, as the vampires have done with their kisses?"
Joséf eyed the young scrap of a human.
He went to the fire, tore off a piece of cooked meat and offered it to the boy, kneeling down before him.
The boy's face looked tattered. A closer examination of his features revealed he clearly hadn't been well fed in weeks. "Here. Eat."
The boy took the meat and devoured it.
"I will not have my pack starve, either. Nor will you be forced to relocate. This is your home.” Joséf sighed and looked around. Some of the faces staring back at him reflected amazement, others seemed relieved. "I'm not a permanent solution. But I will do my best, as long as you don't tie my hands.” He stood and returned beside Kissa. He nodded at Istvan and Dave. "It's time."
Both men acknowledged him. Istvan looked a little worse for wear but his throat was already healing. Mikhail had begun cleaning the wounds even through the Magyar's thick beard.
They would be his right and left hands, Istvan and Dave.
Through all his doubt, all the fear that raged within him, and the addictive issues he'd developed through the Syndicate, Joséf would need the strength of those around him to help pull him from the ugliness in his head.
“All things stem from the criminal organization running San Francisco.” He rubbed his temple. Looking around at his pack, at Istvan and Dave, Joséf ran his hands through his hair. “I need you two to come with me.”
“We can back you, Cap’n.”
Again, Joséf surveyed the faces of those still standing around and eating. A few looked up with trepidation in their eyes. He didn’t know what else to do but to send them into town. “You’re all getting jobs and we’re going to get more in touch with our human sides. But you’re all going to stick close together. I’m not sure how else to go about a governing body, but you are all half-human at least. You should act like it. And I’m leaving Mikhail in charge while we’re gone. He’s got a level head and his compassion as a doctor makes him ideal for the position.” Joséf turned to Mikhail. “You will choose your own cabinet. That work for you?”
The slightly older wolf nodded.
“Good. The rest of you?” Joséf scanned the crowd, seeing gradual acquiescence.
“Will we return?”
Joséf shook his head. “No, Dave. I shall not. I do not know what we’re going to be facing in America, nor for how long we’ll be there. But you two shall be free to return when things settle down.”
Kissa looked up. “I’ll remain with you.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything less.” She nodded and wrapped herself around him, solidifying her presence in his life, his heart and his soul.
