Destiny_A Billionaire Second Chance Romance Page 6

by Scarlet Ellis

“Hello everyone, thank you for being here. It means so much to Rosie and I that you will all support us and I hope that we can be of service to this town. I know most of you will already know Rosie and her family and also her beautiful flower shop. It’s businesses like hers that I care about in this town and want to keep flourishing and surviving for years to come.” Gavin pauses to allow the appreciative applause to die down from the crowd gathered around us.

“But there is one person I wouldn’t be here without, I credit her as my inspiration and the light of my life,” I blush as he says these words because I feel the gathered crowd looking at me. Gavin takes my hand and gives it a little reassuring squeeze.

“Rosie makes me a better person, and honestly she is all that matters in my life. I couldn’t do any of this without her and today I want to ask her a very special and important question.”

Before I know what is happening, Gavin is on a bended knee, looking up at me and still holding my hand.

“Rosie Hanes, will you do me the honor of being my wife?”

I take a sharp intake of breath. I look deep into his eyes, but there is only one answer to this question.

  “Yes…yes, of course I will!”

Gavin beams back at me, slips a beautiful diamond ring onto my finger before standing up.

  “I love you, Rosie Hanes.”

“I love you more Gavin Wolfe.”

We kiss, and a round of applause erupts around us. My life couldn’t be any more perfect right now.

  Chapter 1

  Alice

"Alice Winland?" I heard a voice and looked up. The waiting room was buzzing with people who were waiting for their turn to be seen. It was a typical doctor's office scene—people were sitting on ugly metal chairs flipping through decade-old magazines and trying to pass the time. I'd been waiting there for forty-five minutes myself.

Thankfully, I had nothing urgent to be looked at. I was just there for my bi-annual general health checkup. I was tempted to nearly ask the woman with the bandaged arm to go on ahead of me. I would have if I weren't in a hurry, but I needed to be back home within the hour. I had a conference call with our offices in Tokyo I couldn't miss. The traffic at this time of the evening would definitely eat up most of that hour.

"Me!" I exclaimed, making a split-second decision to not play the happy martyr. I stood up so I could follow the nurse to the check-up room when another door opened.

It was the paediatrician who was stepping out with a little girl.

"It's all done now, Raina, you can go home," the doctor said. The girl, who appeared to be no more than six or seven, had a bandaged forefinger which she was holding up like a lollipop.

"Where's my daddy?" the girl asked as I stepped past her. The doctor looked around with her brows crossed. I stopped in my tracks. I could sense something was wrong and I wanted to help.

"I don't know. Where did he go?" the doctor remarked.

The little girl's eyes were beginning to water, and I knew that panic was soon going to ensue.

"Nurse!" the doctor yelled, catching the attention of the nurse who was leading me to the checkup room.

"Did you see Mr Fraser leave?" the doctor asked and the nurse looked around too.

"I was inside. I have no idea where he went," the nurse replied.

I could see the girl's face contorting. She was about to burst out crying. Not only had she hurt herself somehow, but now her father was missing. I didn't even want to imagine how miserable she was feeling.

"Call reception. Get them to try his phone. This is outrageous!" the doctor complained. Which wasn't helping the kid's situation. She could sense everyone panicking around her.

"Hey," I said, bending down so we could be face to face with each other.

"How's your hand, honey?" I asked, trying to distract her. I wanted her to keep looking at me so she wouldn't see the way the nurse went running away, or the way the other people in the waiting room were staring at her.

"It doesn't hurt anymore," she replied, pouting.

"How did it happen?" I asked.

"Someone pushed me in school and I punched her," the girl said. I couldn't help but burst out laughing. This kid had spunk.

"So, it's just a bruise, huh?"

  She nodded.

"I bet that other kid's never going to punch you again," I said, and she smiled.

"My name is Alice, what's yours?"

"Raina Fraser," she replied, and I stuck out my hand for her to shake.

"It's nice to meet you, Raina," I said, and we shook hands.

She was still smiling, and I was relieved. At least she wasn't on the verge of crying anymore.

"Mr Fraser! How could you just disappear like that?" I heard the doctor exclaim.

"Daddy!" Raina squealed, jumping away from me.

I straightened up and turned to see a man stalking down the hallway towards us. He grabbed Raina and lifted her up in his arms.

"I had to make an urgent phone call," he said, stopping in front of the doctor and me.

"That is no excuse!" the doctor snapped. Raina was pouting again. No child liked to see their parents being reprimanded. The doctor was being extremely insensitive, just because she wasn't patient enough to wait a few minutes with the kid.

The man was looking at me now, with a darkened expression on his face.

"Is my kid okay?" he asked, his voice was hardening.

"She's fine, Mr Fraser, if you care at all," the doctor snapped again.

He was a big man, with broad shoulders and a wide chest. He was towering over all of us, and he could have been intimidating if he tried. But he wasn't trying. I assumed it was because he was in the presence of his daughter. I could sense he was bursting to snap back at the doctor too.

"I'm sure Mr Fraser's very concerned. He was just gone for a few minutes," I spoke up before I could stop myself.

My primary concern was to avoid Raina from bursting into tears.

"I'm sorry, who are you?" the doctor turned to me now.

"I was the one keeping that little girl company while you were shouting out orders and panicking," I replied.

I wasn't exactly in the habit of giving strangers an earful, especially not a doctor who I assumed did good work every day. But right then, she wasn't helping the situation by belittling a man in front of his daughter.

"Just keep an eye on that finger, Mr Fraser," she said and whipped away from us.

"Ms Winland!" The GP who was supposed to see me had stuck his head around the door.

"It's fine, I'll come back some other day. You should see someone else. I'm late already," I told him.

When I turned around, I saw that the man and Raina were still standing there. He was staring at me intently.

"Thank you for keeping my daughter company," he said.

It was then that I noticed just how hot he was. His dark beard was neat, and well looked after, and his brown eyes were glittering and intelligent. He towered over me, and I felt small in his presence. I grew tense, imagining what it would feel like if he lifted me up in his arms and pinned me to the wall right there.

"Her name is Alice, daddy," Raina said, interrupting my inappropriate thoughts. I suddenly remembered that he was definitely not available.
