The Mercenary And The Marriage Vow Page 24

by Doreen Roberts

She caught her breath. “You’re proposing?”

“Isn’t that what people do when they want to get married?”

She smiled through her tears. “Well, it’s not too romantic but I guess it’s the best a devil can manage.”

He lifted a tear from her cheek with his finger. “So what’s the answer?”

She pretended to think about it. “I guess it would be an adventure.”

  “Is that a yes?”

  “That’s definitely a yes.”

“Then that’s settled. Now let’s go eat. We have a lot to discuss and we think better on a full stomach, remember?”

She remembered. She would always remember their first days together with a special kind of bittersweet nostalgia. No matter what happened in the future, or how long they were together, that’s how she would always see him—the fierce, arrogant mercenary intent on taking her back to the daughters he thought she’d abandoned.

  The devil she knew.

Only now she knew him better. She could understand now what had driven him those first few hours she’d known him. His own mother had abandoned him, and he wasn’t going to let that happen to two innocent little girls.

He had opened up his heart to her, and he’d led her into a world she had only dreamed about. He was her man, and she would be his woman until the day she took her last breath.
