A Scandalous Request Page 23

She possessed a sharp mind. She produced viable ideas. He saw no reason whatsoever to oppose her seeing this project through. In fact, he rather liked that aspect of her. Her uniqueness fit well with his. Burke smiled from the inside out. Even marrying, he could still thumb his nose at Society. His title and wealth would protect them both. This was all too right for it not to happen.

There was just one more matter to see to. But it wasn’t a small one. In fact, this blossoming garden might well die from it.

“Rose,” he said. “There is something you need to know about me. It might affect your decision.”

“What is it, Burke?” At his hesitation, she said. “Please, tell me.”

How he wished he could erase this part of his history. But if she is to pledge herself to him, to bear his children, she had a right to know.

“The second earl, he was not my legitimate father. My mother, she…knew other men during their marriage. Other than my friend Drew, no one in Society is aware of this. If that helps.”

“It doesn’t help,” she said, and he deflated near to nothing. Until she finished her meaning. “It doesn’t help, because it doesn’t matter. I love you, Burke. I accept all that comes with you, just as you do me.”

He wrapped himself around her then.

“I love you, too, Rose, forever and always. No matter what.”

“Forever and always. No matter what,” she repeated.

Leaning back a bit, he said, “How does this sound? We’ll go back to London and marry in a quiet ceremony as soon as possible. We will see the new home built and the children settled. In the meantime, we’ll work on making some children of our own. That is, if you’ll consent to be my wife.”

Rose’s smile dominated her face. He caught her joy before she even spoke the words. “It sounds like a perfect life.”

“It will be a perfect life,” Burke promised as he took her into his arms, where he intended to keep her for the rest of their days.

  A word about the author…

I lived most of my life in the wondrous city of Las Vegas, Nevada. For ten years my husband and I traveled several months of the year in an R.V., and I was fortunate to see every state in this amazing country. Now I live in beautiful Michigan, where I’ve learned about layering clothes and that boats don’t have brakes.

  The Darkest Sum

  by Micki Miller

The embodiment of the world's evil has but a single fear, one homeless girl.

Twenty-two year old Liz Linden and her nineteen year old brother, Jacob, have lived in the storm drains that run under Las Vegas for almost one year. There are many others living in the makeshift camps. She does her best to make their concrete camp into a home until she can save enough money to get them out of the tunnels and into an apartment.

Of late, her wish to get out has become desperate, as she's come to realize something else is down there--the offspring of malice and hypocrisy. It lives, it grows, and if not stopped, it will fully exist. It is the total of mankind's evils--The Darkest Sum.

  A Love Made to Measure

  by Eliza Emmett

Cora Larsen is a Victorian tailoress on Regent Street, where she creates dresses that are “the toast of the Season.” She is a gifted maker of men’s suits too, not that many are willing to have a woman take their measurements.

Lord Galavyin believes in marrying for love, not convenience. He feels bad enough about the privilege of being a baron and refuses to consider an arranged marriage. One day, he walks through Cora’s door to collect a dress and is smitten with her forward-thinking social ideals. But, despite their growing friendship, he cannot persuade Cora to ignore the difference in their status and address him by his first name—Grant.

When Cora loses the lease on her shop, she thinks it is simply a coincidence that the building belongs to Grant’s family. She doesn’t yet know she is in love with a man whose mother is the worst enemy one can imagine.

Grant will do anything to keep Cora safe and employed, even if it takes helping her without her knowledge. What follows is a game of cat and mouse that will test Cora’s resolve and Grant’s love to their limits.
