‘You aren’t sitting in the dust, are you mum?’ Petra didn’t want her pretty, yellow dress to get dirty.
‘I’m sitting in the chair,’ said Steven.
Davidia suddenly became breathless.
‘Mum. You’re as red as a beetroot.’
Steven was perfectly safe. He sat awkwardly in the chair. Davidia relaxed slightly. She remembered that when she sat there as a child, weird events began happening.
‘Are you okay, Steven?’
‘It’s a bit small and hard on my bottom, but otherwise I like it. I don’t even mind the dust.’
‘When I was about twelve, I discovered that chair in a box tied with pink ribbons. I sat in it just like you did. That’s when the Rock of Yocklaw appeared.’
‘What’s that?’
‘I think it was a fantasy place, but it was so real, I actually felt I was there.’
‘From here, you went where?’
‘Out of the window on a day, quite like today. Did I ever tell you the story about the Rock of Yocklaw and the Prince of Triplock?’
‘No, mum.’
‘Perhaps it was time I did.’
There was an almost deathly silence. Only the sounds of the annoying winds buffeting the window-pane interrupted the serenity of the room. The ambience of sweet rose scents swarmed around them.
‘Ignatus, is that you?’ flashed through Davidia’s mind. ‘Ah! That was the smell.’
The three family members stayed alert, whilst two listened intently, sitting in Davidia’s secret place.
