“That wig was practically stapled to my head I’ll have you know.”

His thumb stroked my wrist in slow circles. “Then, when you finally agreed to go out with me, you turned it into an interrogation. I was half in love with you at that point. Finally, someone as nosey as I am.”

“You’re selling yourself short there,” I point out. “There’s no one as nosey as you.”

He wouldn’t be distracted from his story, though.

“It wasn’t until I saw you with my son that I knew I wanted you forever.”

Cocking an eyebrow, I said, “I made him clean out the bathroom.”

“And he loved it. He was just as taken with you as I am and still is. You’ve made yourself a place here, Harper, and this family wouldn’t be complete without you in it,” he said. “Now, shut up and put on the damn ring.”

I opened up the box and smiled. If I’d expected a traditional ring, I would’ve been disappointed. The band was a rose gold color, thin and intricate. It looked woven, like the trunk of an ancient tree. Right in the center, where the band got thicker, a beautiful gem sat. It was rough around the edges, less polished than a princess cut or any other engagement ring I’d ever seen.

Smiling through my tears, I put it on my finger, loving the way it fit me perfectly. But the best part, by far, was the unusual color of the gem; one I’d seen many times lighting up my hands with my own brand of magic.

  It was green.
