President isn’t ‘Mary Sue’ Page 4

by He Han

  Li Han was very unsatisfied, and angrily retorted, “I let you live here yet you insist on paying me rent. I give you a house and car yet you don’t want it. I want to lessen your burden yet you find me meddlesome! Why are you being so courteous with me! Can’t I just be a ‘Mary Sue’ president in peace and quiet!”

  Ruan Yan rolled his eyes back right down to his ankles, “It’s not that I’m being courteous to you, you’re just not cut out to be a ‘Mary Sue’ president, understand? Hurry up, stop being so ‘Mary Sue’ and go do the dishes.”

  Li Han had never felt so wronged in his life.

  He washed the pots while defending himself, “Who said I’m not ‘Mary Sue’! You’re just being bias because of your first impression of me! Have you read my exclusive interview on the business magazine? I’m a god-like figure who is tall, rich and handsome, a person who has the looks if you want the looks and has the ability if you want the ability…”

  With the murmurs of the god-like figure who’s tall, rich and handsome next to his ears, Ruan Yan sat cross legged on the sofa and used the laptop to help Li Han organise the incoming emails about work. He lifted his eyes to look at the man’s back figure and the corners of his lips formed a small smile.

  * * *

  [1] 桥豆麻袋 (Qiao Dou Ma Dai) Chinese people like to put together chinese words that resemble phrases in other languages. This particular phrase (when spoken in Chinese) sounds similar to the Japanese phrase, chotto matte, which means wait a moment.

  [2] 低音炮 This can be used to describe someone, typically a male who has a really deep, low, rich voice. As a Mary Sue male character, is often associated with that typical low and deep voice of a dominating character (at least in Ruan Yan’s world), in this context, Ruan Yan is saying why is there a sudden plot twist that is bringing out a Mary Sue president.

  [3] 被门夹过的核桃 Literally means a walnut that’s been cracked open by a door. Essentially, if someone eats this then they become retarded and dumb, because it’s said that walnuts are good for the brain, whereas people often insult others being dumb by saying, “Did your head get nipped by a door?”. This phrase is the joining of these two sentences. It’s said that only a person who’s been nipped in the head by a door can be cured by eating a walnut that was nipped by a door. However, if a normal person eats one that was cracked open by a door, then they become dumb.

  [4] 护舒宝 A brand name (officially translated as Whisper) and is one of the more popular brands for female sanitary items

  [5] Yooooooooooo Okay, so this is quite well known as a symbol/sign for yaoi. For those who don’t know, it is based on the reaction of westerners to BL anime. This guy was reacting to Boku no Pico and kept screaming “Yoooooooooooooo!”, thus where this expression came from.

  [6] 东施效颦 An ugly woman trying to imitate a famous beauty. The idiom is used to describe when someone imitates another person badly and ends up with bad results. The story goes that Xi Shi, one of the four great beauties of China, had a bad heart. One day after washing the clothes, she walked home when he chest suddenly felt painful. She pressed her hand against her heart and furrowed her brows. The villagers praised her saying that even now, she looked beautiful. Upon seeing Xi Shi gain the praise of the villagers, another woman, who was ugly, decided to copy her believing that she too would look pretty if she did this. However, it just made her look even worse.
