Rock My World Page 8

by Masters, Cate

You’ve bewitched me with your charms

I was a lost and stupid fool

  Until my heart recognized you

You see, it all comes down to you

I need you, it’s no mistake

I want you, can’t you see it’s fate?

  You rocked my world

Showed me what I was missing

Now all I’m missing is you

  Forever, you

  You, forever

He faded the last note, intense blue eyes aimed straight at the camera.

Back straight and stiff as an iron pole, she couldn’t move. She wouldn’t know where to go anyway. Damn him!

Rex ended the performance with the briefest of smiles, but she held onto its lightning warmth that set her abuzz.

The audience thundered its approval before the Applause sign began to flash. The song had touched them, too, but his lyrics had reached into Cynthia’s soul. She wanted to clap, too, to show him some sort of approval, but she could hardly breathe. Besides, he wouldn’t be able to see her anyway.

Jimmy leaned over the desk. “What’d you think?”

She laid a hand on his arm. “Where is he, Jimmy?” she practically begged.

“In the Green Room.” Kane winked. “Waiting for you.”

A laugh burst from her. She kissed the host’s cheek as she rose, then hurried backstage. The assistant stood to one side, and she nearly stopped to kiss him, too. Everyone had been in on it, apparently. She rushed down the corridor and threw open the door to the Green Room, but the sight stunned her to a halt. She might have been transported to another place—daisies, cornflowers, and tall tassled grass filled the space.

On a quilted blanket, Rex sat in the middle of them. “You rocked my world.” He said it with a kind of wonder. “The question is, do you want me to rock yours?”

After closing the door, she literally shook in her boots as she walked the narrow path toward him. “Yes.”

“Yes?” He set the guitar aside.

She nodded and knelt in front of him.

He clasped her hands. “Come away with me.”

So many questions filled her mind, but she only asked one. “Where?”

“London, Bali, New Orleans, anywhere you want.” With each word, he eased closer, searching her face with excitement. “We’ll start over, get to know each other properly this time.”

“That sounds perfect. And this...” She glanced at the flowers surrounding them. “This is so wonderful. I can’t believe you remembered.”

His Adam’s apple bobbed and his eyes glazed. “I told you before, amnesia helped me remember the most important thing. You.”

All the love she’d been holding back welled up inside, impossible to contain. “I’ve missed you so much.” She couldn’t stop her voice from trembling. “I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you so.”

“We’re together, that’s all that matters.” He turned serious. “But it won’t always be wonderful. There might be a time or two you hate me.”

At least he had no illusions about fairy tale endings. Good relationships required a lot of work. She was ready. Was he? “We might make each other crazy.”

His grin widened. “In the best possible way.” With a laugh, he threw his arms around her and drew her down. When she opened her eyes, all she saw were flowers—and Rex, smiling down at her. Filling her vision. A view she could get used to.

She threw her arms around his neck and tapped into her wild side as she pulled him close. “Rock my world.”
