Smith was stood about halfway up, rocking on his heels and taking edgy glances at his watch.
“Smith,” I called out. His head jerked my way.
“Ah, Mr. Stone. Thank goodness you’re here.” He was agitated. Twitchy, nervy, his voice laced with fear.
I approached him with caution, my eyes darting everywhere. “Yeah? What’s up?”
He sighed and stepped up to me. “It appears your hopes have come to fruition.”
My brow furrowed. “What are you on about?”
“The Armor of Agony.”
My heart skipped a beat. “What about it? No one stole it, did they?”
Smith shook his head.
Relief swept over me.
“Worse,” Smith said and I crashed and burned in the sea of anxiety.
“What happened?”
“Well, while conducting our experiments, I’m afraid something went awry.”
I frowned. “What do you mean ‘awry’?”
“You better see for yourself,” he said, opening the door behind him, the name ‘Smith’ embossed on it.
He stepped inside and I followed, my wide eyes taking in everything. I got the desk, the filing cabinets, fake potted plant, PC printer, all regular, anal-retentive stuff. And then I looked at the far end of the room. Something was standing by the window, its back turned to me. Something not human. A bulky frame covered in scars and tattoos and patches of fur. It was staring intently out of the window like it was waiting for something. It turned to face me and my eyes almost popped out of my skull.
“Gabriel Stone,” came a growling, demonic voice from the thing now walking across the office toward me, a faint aroma of brimstone overriding the plastic office smells.
Draxil. He was alive. Not just pieces of the Armor of Agony, but fully whole. A walking and talking demon. His face was a scarred contortion of hate and rage as he stomped up to me, the broken chains around his wrists and neck rattling. I glanced at Smith, who had a rueful grin on his face.
Draxil stopped ahead of me and gazed down at me with those lava-red eyes. “Where is the Dark Bearer?” he snarled.
Oh boy!
