“You must be Jill,” the woman said. “I’m Amanda Short. Congratulations on your win.”
“Thank you. This is the first competition I’ve ever won.”
“Jimmy is going to take a photograph of the presentation. It will appear in next month’s issue, if that’s okay with you?”
“Sure. That’s great.”
“Okay then. On behalf of Biscuit Periodicals, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate you on winning the custard cream competition. She held out a gold envelope. As I took hold of it, the photographer snapped a few pictures.
“Thank you very much.” I lifted the flap, and took out the voucher which was for one hundred pounds.
“Thank you for coming down here today, Jill. I hope you enjoy your prize.”
“I’m sure I will. Just one thing?”
“Yes?”
“How will I get the others? Will you post them to me?”
She looked a little puzzled. “Post what to you?”
“The other vouchers.”
“What other vouchers?”
“For the other eleven months.”
“I’m not sure I follow?”
“Isn’t the prize meant to be one year’s supply of custard creams?”
“Yes. One year’s supply. That’s what this voucher covers. We figured that two packets per week would be more than enough for anyone.”
Two packets a week? Was she kidding? I could eat that many in a day!
“Oh? Right, of course. Thank you very much.”
I took the tube back to the railway station. I’d already spent more on train tickets and taxi fares than the voucher was worth.
Two packets a week? Cheapskates!
