“Caissir saved my life ... saved us all,” Ashre said. “If he needs me, it’s what I should do.”
Falon put a hand on the kit—and a strange, painful feeling seemed to run into his fingertips.
He stood up. “When would you leave?”
Caissir looked at Ashre. “Tomorrow, I guess. The sooner, the better.”
“And the sooner you leave, the sooner the day of your return will arrive,” Falon said. He paused, looking at them now, Ashre rising to stand next to Caissir.
“I will miss you both.”
And feeling more alone than ever, Falon turned and walked out of the great hall.
But he didn’t walk up to the nursery to look at his kits, or to the royal chambers to be with Taline.
Instead, he walked out on the massive porch that overlooked all of Tizare.
And he stood in the cool night air and breathed deeply.
As he watched his city glowing like some rare and wonderful jewel.
His jewel, to guard and protect….
