  ROBERT B. PARKER WAS BORN IN 1932 AND HAS A PH.D. from Boston University. He has been Professor of English at Northeastern University, Massachusetts, USA, teaching courses in American literature, and has written several serious textbooks, including The Personal Response to Literature. He has written numerous novels featuring his wry Boston private detective, Spenser; of these Penguin publish The Godwulf Manuscript, God Save the Child, Mortal Stakes, Promised Land, The Judas Goat, A Savage Place, Valediction, Early Autumn, Looking for Rachel Wallace, Ceremony, and A Catskill Eagle, The Widening Gyre, Taming a Sea-horse and Pale Kings and Princes (also published by Viking). Promised Land won the Edgar Allan Poe Award in the USA for the best mystery novel of 1976.

  Robert Parker has also written two non-Spenser novels, Wilderness, and Love and Glory. An enthusiastic sportsman, he is the author of Sports Illustrated Weights Training. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with his wife Joan, and his hobbies include jogging and canoeing.
