On Deadly Tides Page 23

by Elizabeth J Duncan

“Dearly beloved,” began Rev. Thomas Evans. And then, just as it began, it was over, and Penny and Colin led the way out of the church. As everyone gathered around the doors, offering good wishes and congratulations to the newly married couple, Penny held her new husband’s arm.

As they led the way out of the churchyard to the waiting cars that would take them to Ty Brith Hall for the reception, Penny paused beside a simple gravestone.

She let go of Colin’s arm as she gracefully bent her knees and placed her bouquet on the grave, then stepped back and bowed her head for a moment in silent tribute.

She placed a hand on the brooch she wore on her left shoulder, a replica of the Queen’s leaf brooch that had been a 1953 Christmas gift from the women of Auckland. Hers had been sent to her by Louise Graham, with a request that she wear it today in memory of Jessica.

And then she slipped her hand through her new husband’s arm, and with a backward glance at the friends who had loved and supported her over the years, she took her first confident steps into her married life.
