Silent Hearts Page 31

by Gwen Florio

  4. The novel raises questions about the complex nature of events that happened after 9/11. How does the author explore different sides and perspectives in this time in history?

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gwen Florio grew up in a 250-year-old brick farmhouse on a wildlife refuge in Delaware, with a sweeping view across tide marsh to the waters of the Delaware Bay. The University of Delaware launched her on an award-winning journalism career, with stories ranging from the shooting at Columbine High School to the glitz of the Miss America pageant and the more practical Miss Navajo contest, whose participants slaughter and cook a sheep. She has reported from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia, as well as Lost Springs, Wyoming (population three).

In 2013, she turned to fiction with the publication of Montana, which won the High Plains Book Award and the Pinckley Prize for debut crime fiction. Four books in the Lola Wicks mystery series—termed “gutsy” by the New York Times—have followed so far.

About Montana—the state, that is. Florio finally rediscovered those long sight lines she fell in love with back in Delaware, the difference being that instead of tide marsh bordered by bay, Montana features prairie edged by mountain and sky. She lives in the university town of Missoula with her partner, Scott, and an exuberant bird dog named Nell, in the shadow of Mount Jumbo, with only the occasional backyard bear.
