The Genome Legacy [Book One] Page 16

Octavius clears his throat and looks up at me, the usual mirth gone from his four black eyes. “I’m sorry I lied to you. I’m also sorry I didn’t listen to Arrow. I’d give anything to take back what happened, so you wouldn’t even face this now. I side with Echo. Whatever you decide I’ll support you.”

I frown “It’s yours, too Are you sure you don’t want to give more of an opinion?”

He shakes his head, his white hair falling into his four eyes. “No. Like you said, it should be your choice. I don’t want to sway you.”

Arrow growls. “I can’t believe we’re even talking about this. It’s obvious what you should do. The tentacle beasts were clear that nothing good would come from this if I didn’t get the antidote to you in time.”

Rosie steps over. “Have they seen what happens when it attaches itself to a human?”

A red hue crawls up his neck to his cheeks “They said nothing about it. As far as I can tell we’re the first humans here ever. And I don’t think you should be here for this conversation, Rosie.”

I take Rosie’s hand before he can scare her off. “Stop being an asshole. We’re all in this together. You need to stop making it all about our group. We’re a community.”

Rosie nods. “Yeah! I was so worried when you said you would let her sweat out the sickness. But you wouldn’t let me put in my opinion. Just because I’m not fucking her doesn’t mean I don’t care or want a say in what happens to her.”

Arrow throws his hands in the air before letting them hit his thighs. “Fine. Do whatever you want. See if I help you when it all turns to shit, and we have a monster on the loose around here.” He strides away.

I bite at my lip more. The last thing I want is for him to hate me, but I also must decide what’s best for me. “I-I’m g-going to keep it. If it turns out to be less than human, then I’ll deal with it myself.”

Rosie pulls me into a hug. “I’ll help you in any way I can. I think you’re making the right choice.”

The others stand. Octavius pulls me into a hug next. “Thank you, Squeaks.” He lets me go. “I will make you something to eat. He sprints off, I almost miss him wiping a tear from his eyes

So, he wanted me to keep it.

Echo stands with some help from King. “I’ll help also. I’ll talk to Arrow about it, calm him down.” He clicks before going off toward where Arrow stands, hacking at a tree.

King rubs the back of his neck as he stared down at me with his intoxicating yellow eyes. “I may not agree with your choice, but I will not abandon you. I’ll support you and the child in any way I can. I promise.”

  I nod. “Thank you.”

My hand goes to my stomach. I could be making the worst or best decision of my life. Whichever one it is, I know I’ll pull through it, and we’ll all be okay. I must keep rolling with the punches and see what life has in store for this thing forming inside me.
