Promise to a Boy Page 21

by Mary Brady

“Have him tell Kyle if he wants to.” Lena spoke softly and didn’t say what they were both thinking. It would be good for Kyle to have one parent around, especially if something happened.

“I’ll talk to Jesse, but I’m always here for all of you, sis.”

“I know, Abbs. I know. You’re the best. Gotta go. This card is about to run dry.”

  “I love you, sis.”

The phone line went dead, but Abby could still feel the connection. Lena was alive.

Jesse was alive. Reed loved her.

  “Holy cow.”

“Holy cow, what?” her mother asked from behind her.

“I can’t believe this day. I can’t believe my life, your life.” She elbowed her mother and looked at Kenny sitting at her kitchen table with the other guys. They looked as if they gathered like that all the time. Maybe they would. “How’s it going with Kenny?”

“Well, let’s just say, one of these nights, I am not volunteering to babysit and if there’s a hankie tied to the front door handle, don’t come a knockin’.

“And you?” Her mother put an arm around Abby’s shoulder and squeezed.

“Reed wants to stay. I’m not sure of any of the details, but I love him, Mom, and he loves me. Can you believe it?”

  “I can, dear, I can.”

Reed got up from the table and came over to where Abby and Delanna were standing. “We’re getting kind of lonely over there all by ourselves. We could use the company of some beautiful women.”

Delanna preened at his words and sashayed away.

Abby smiled at him and her heart filled with more love than she ever thought a heart could hold and the whole world seemed to glow. She’d finally found a way to see the good in everything.

  “Yes.”

“Yes, what?” He pushed her curls back from her face.

“You asked me if I believed in happily ever after.”

He leaned in and kissed her and when they looked up, everyone cheered.
