Winnie reached over and patted his hand. “I’ll leave you two alone to read your letter. Colt looks like he needs a hand in the outfield.”
Caleb still sat holding the envelope without opening it.
Fae placed her hand on his arm, waiting until he looked at her to offer a smile of encouragement.
“I don’t want to read it.”
Fae pulled her eyebrows together in confusion. “Why not?”
Caleb looked like a little boy sitting there, afraid of being in trouble from his father. Fae wanted to pull him into her arms and hold him, but she couldn’t do that out here in the middle of the churchyard with the entire town around them. “Do you want me to read it for you?”
He didn’t say anything for a moment, then handed it to her without saying a word. He kept his eyes on the ground as she opened the envelope and unfolded the letter.
“Dearest Caleb,
I’m hoping that by the time you read this letter, you’ll have found the man inside of you I always knew was there. I know I wasn’t always the best father and sometimes was hard on you when I shouldn’t have been. The thing is, you reminded me so much of myself as a young man, and I desperately wanted to keep you from making the same mistakes I did.
I walked away from my father and family, determined I didn’t want his money. They didn’t approve of my marriage to your ma, and I loved her more than anything. We came to Promise because we wanted our own start, where we could have our own family.
You also reminded me so much of your ma, that sometimes it hurt to look at you. Your black hair was a constant reminder of her and in my grief, I might not have treated you fairly.
But I know you deserve a chance, and if given to you, I know you’ll step up and do what you have to do. I have faith in you. I’m sorry for the terms I put out for you to inherit, but my wish for you is that you will find the kind of love I had with your ma. I truly hope the woman I chose for you can give you that. I had a few women respond to my ad, but there was something about Fae that told me she was the one who could make you see your worth.
Take care of her and give her a good life in Promise. I hope you will find happiness.
Love always,
Pa.”
Fae’s voice choked as she finished the letter, then lifted her eyes to look at Caleb. His eyes were on hers and he reached over and took her hand in his. “My pa was right. There was something about you. And I’m so glad he chose you.”
She was still having a hard time getting her voice, the emotion from reading the letter consuming her. His father had loved him so much and believed in him, even though Caleb never did. And he’d chosen her for his son.
As they sat there on the blanket in the middle of Promise, Fae’s heart swelled with joy. She’d never had a family, until now. This man was hers, and this town was her home.
“And I promise to always take care of you and give you the life you deserve. Just like my pa wanted.”
Caleb leaned in and took her in his arms, covering her lips with his. Happiness overtook her, and she sent a silent prayer of thanks up to Caleb’s father. He’d known they needed each other, and his final act of love had brought them together.
And Fae knew it was where she was meant to be.
