Then we spent the next hour laughing, joking, making fun of each other, and doing everything except conducting official club business.
After a while, Daisy pointed out into the yard behind the Boathouse. “Look!”
We all looked. Abby and Purrkins were lying next to each other, basking in the sun. Then, when Abby got up and walked to a shady spot under an elm tree, Purrkins followed.
“That is so sweet,” Daisy said.
I walked over to the animals. “You guys ready to get started with today’s training?” I asked. “Everybody up! Let’s go! Spin! Weave! Crouch! Lean!”
They both looked up at me.
Purrkins licked Abby’s paw.
Abby sniffed Purrkins’s nose.
Then they both went back to sleep.
“Sorry, Jimmy,” Daisy said, “but they’re doing the one thing more important than crimebiting.”
“What’s that?” I asked.
She smiled. “Making friends.”
A HUGE WOOF of thanks to all the animal shelters in the world—and the workers therein—for providing life-saving help to our most needy citizens. If it weren’t for The Little Pink Shelter, my family wouldn’t have Abby in our lives! And you wouldn’t have this book in your hands.
TOMMY Greenwald is the author of the CrimeBiters series (about a crime-fighting superhero vampire dog named Abby) and the Charlie Joe Jackson series (about the most reluctant reader ever born). Tommy lives in Connecticut with his wife, Cathy; his kids, Charlie, Joe, and Jack; and his dogs, Coco and Abby. Abby is not necessarily a crimefighting superhero vampire dog—but she makes Tommy and his family very, very happy, which is definitely a kind of superpower when you think about it.
