Back at school—Jefferson thinks it’s a good idea to keep going—the students have plenty to gossip about. Theories over what really happened at the dance, and Mr. Webster’s and Captain Krush’s disappearances, span from mid-life crisis to military insurgency. Those that do know the truth keep silent. Ashley is back to her bubbly self but doesn’t wear Love Moon shirts anymore. She’s moved on to comic books and super-heroes.
“So are you, you know . . .” she says and wiggles her eyebrows at me as we walk to class.
“Am I what?” I ask around a sucker in my mouth that I bought from a vending machine.
“I saw your bite, remember? That was a werewolf bite, wasn’t it?” she says and I almost choke on the sucker. I pull it out and toss it into the trash. “Are you a werewolf now?”
“No, I’m not.” I shake my head morosely and pat her arm. “It really was just a dog bite. I promise. But don’t tell anyone, all right?”
“Why not?” Her brow furrows so I smile in an attempt to wave her off like it’s no big deal even though it’s a very big deal. I hold out my pinky finger and wink. She sighs and wraps her own around mine.
“You think those big shot agents would ever let me live it down? Getting bit by a mutt when the town’s swimming with werewolves?” I whisper. “I can trust you, right? You’re the only friend I have around here apart from my brother.”
She wrinkles her nose and giggles. “I promise. You can trust me.”
There still hasn’t been word back from Jefferson’s expert about my blood and the potential it has to cure the werewolves, but he says it’ll come in time. I do get updates from Witty on Dasc’s recovery progress. It’s slow but he’s coming around. Then the interrogations will start and we may finally know what happened to Jefferson’s daughter and the others that disappeared.
Dasc said a war is coming and he was moving his pieces into place. Now it’s time to move ours.
I’ll get my answers. I’ll become the cure. And if Dasc or his followers ever come for me or my family again, I’ll be ready.
