“Sounds good,” I say, fixing my dress.

  Chapter 10

Early in the afternoon, my stomach starts growling. I remember I haven’t eaten yet today. I haven’t had anything to drink either, for that matter. I’m more than two thirds of the way through the script and decide to take a walk, get some fresh air, and find some food.

At the receptionist’s desk, I pause. “Where can I get something to eat around here?” I glance from one blonde to the other. One has a salad sitting on a paper plate in front of her. The other has an apple. I’m guessing they got the rabbit food from somewhere.

Blonde One speaks. “There’s a food cart down the street. Take your first left. You can’t miss it.”

“Great. Thanks.” I open the door and then think of something. “Just in case he calls, would you please let Mr. Zane know where I am.”

  Blonde Two sneers. “Of course.”

The sun outside is hot, but a light wind makes the heat bearable. I walk in the direction Blonde One pointed until I arrive at the first left. I take it and walk a ways. There’s no food cart. I realize I’m near the lot where they tape Singing Idol. I know this because of the gigantic sign on the warehouse with Singing Idol over the door. A couple of people are milling about and I stop a pudgy older man.

“Excuse me. Can you tell me where the food cart is? I can’t seem to find it.”

The man gives me a once over. “There’s no food cart today. It’s here only when there’s filming, and we aren’t filming.”

I feel my face fall and the pudgy guy seems to sense my hunger. “I have a granola bar and a water, if you want it.”

I’m about to turn him down, but can’t. I’m really hungry. “Sure. Thanks. That would be great.”

He reaches inside his man bag and gives them to me.

“I promise to pay you back.”

  He smiles. “Not a problem.”

I turn away and start back up the hill. When I see Blondes One and Two, I’m going to give them a fucking earful. Stupid bitches.

“Hey, where are you working?” the pudgy man asks, interrupting my thoughts.

I pause and turn back. “In the bungalows at the top of the hill.” I rip open the granola bar and take a bite.

“You’re working for Mr. Zane then.” It’s a question, but he says it as a statement.

“You got it.” I swallow and open the water, draining more than half the bottle.

He smiles. “Well then I guess I’ll see you around.”

“Yep, see ya.” I wave as he walks away and I start back. When I get to the top of the hill, I turn right. The bungalow isn’t far.

A horn honks and I jump. John Cruze is driving a golf cart. He stops alongside me. “Need a lift?”

I want to say yes, but figure I probably shouldn’t. “Nah, I’m just going back to the office.” I point in its direction.

He seems disappointed. “Yeah, okay.” Then he notices the half eaten granola bar in my hand. “Is that what you’re eating?”

“Sure,” I say, wishing it weren’t true.

He pats the seat next to him. “Come on. I’ll take you to lunch.”

I shake my head even though my stomach starts a riot. “I probably should get back.”

“What? Really? I’m sure John Zane wants you to eat. You have to keep up your strength, right?” He winks.

I can’t help but smile. “You’re right.” I climb on next to him.

“Hold on.” He pushes on the gas and the little cart jumps forward.

  Chapter 11

John pulls up next to an old building and puts the cart in park. “Come on.” He takes my hand and leads me inside. No lights are on, but light from the sun filters through the windows, giving everything a warm glow. John leads me deeper into the house and up some stairs off the kitchen. The inside is empty and smells of dust.

“What was this building used for?”

He grabs my hand. “Ever see Back to the Future?” The wood floor creaks as we make our way down the hall. A part of me thinks I should be afraid. I really don’t know John Cruze. He could be a serial killer.

“I’ve heard of it, but never saw the movie.”

“Ah, well, this building was used for several scenes. The front is the clock tower where he goes back in time. Inside was used for the lead character’s house.”

“So where are you taking me? Is it safe to be up here?” I ask, trying to keep up. He opens a door. It’s empty except for a red-and-white checkered blanket laid out on the floor and a picnic basket on top of it.

“It’s safe.” He smiles and ushers me into the room, his hand resting on my lower back. “I hope you like peanut butter and jelly.” He sits on the floor and pull out some sandwiches.

I sit across from him, feeling suddenly nervous. “I do.”

  “Good.” John hands me one.

I unwrap it and take a bite, chew, swallow, and take another bite.

John chuckles. “Damn, you were hungry.”

“Starved,” I say, taking another bite.

When I’ve eaten the whole thing, he pulls a bottle of water from the basket.

  “Want to wash it down?”

“Yes, please.” I take the bottle, open it and tip my head back, gulping down several swallows.

“Good thing I brought two,” John says, his voice filled with amusement.

“Sorry.” I’m suddenly embarrassed by my manners. “Thanks so much for the sandwich and the water. It really hit the spot.”

  “You’re welcome. Want another?”

Holy shit, I really do. “I probably shouldn’t.”

John seems to read my mind and pulls another sandwich from the basket and hands it to me. “Here.”

“You’re like my best friend,” I say, sinking my teeth into the sandwich.

“I want to be,” he says seriously, but his eyes and dimple keep the comment light.

“Did you always want to be an actor?” I ask between bites. He pulls out a bottle of wine and two paper cups.

“Actually, no. My dad owned his own construction company. From the time I was three or four, he’d take me on jobs with him. I loved it. Both me and my dad thought I’d take over the business one day.”

“What made you change your mind?” I take the cup he offers and sip. It’s good.

“Well,” he clears his throat, seems a little uncomfortable.

“Sorry, you don’t have to tell me. Sometimes my mouth gets me into trouble.” I can’t help but think about last night.

John’s beautiful eyes linger on my mouth. I wonder what he’s thinking, but I’m pretty sure I know. He did say we’d fuck again. Usually wine and an empty house equal fucking.

He also said we’d be friends first, I tell myself as I take a cup of wine.

“Will you do me a favor?” he asks.

I take a large gulp. “Okay, but I should probably get back soon.”

“Sure. First I want to play twenty questions. Get to know you.”

“Fun.” I finish off the cup and set it on the blanket. “I’ll go first.”

  He takes a drink. “Shoot.”

“Is John Cruze the name you were born with?” Jessica and I read the gossip magazines. A few months ago they mentioned that John Cruze was a made up name, but they were only guessing.

He lies on his side and fills both of our cups. “No.”

“Okay, what is it, then?” I ask, taking the cup.

He laughs and shakes his head. “Yes or no answers only.”

“Oh, okay.” I gulp down the rest of the wine. “Will you tell me your real name?”

“Yes.” He runs a hand over his head. “Seventeen more to go.”

I lay down so we’re facing each other. “Is your first name John?”

  “Yes.”

  “Is it short for Jonathan?”

“Yes again.” He rests his head on his palm and gives me a quizzical look.

“But your last name isn’t Cruze?”

  “Is that a ques
tion?” He smiles and gives me the perfect view of his dimple.

“No, I guess not.” I lean over, grab the wine, and fill my cup again. “You want more?”

“Yes.” He pulls at a stray strand of hair. “Thirteen left.”

“Okay, give me a second.” I take a drink and think. “Where are you from?”

He smirks. “It has to be a yes or no question.”

“Dammit,” I say and we both laugh. “Are you from L.A.?”

  “No.”

“Grrrr, I’m learning what your name isn’t and where you aren’t from but not a whole lot else.”

“Keep going,” he says softly, his eyes roaming over my lips.

“Have you ever been in love?” I ask the question before I think about it.

He sits up and crosses his legs, gives me a strange look. “No,” he finally says.

“I see.” I sit up but can’t cross my legs without exposing bare pussy, so I tuck my legs under me. “Do you have any brothers and sisters?”

  “Yes.”

  “Do you like them?”

“Yes.” He scoots closer to me.

“Are you glad to be doing this movie?”

“Yes.” He leans forward and rests his chin on his fists.

“Do you like John Zane?” I can’t help the question. Not that it matters, but I want to know.

Irritation crosses his features. He takes a large drink. “No. Seven more.”

“Do you like me?” I ask, trying to sound confident, but my heart is pumping wildly.

“Yes.” He touches my bottom lip and I shiver. “Now we’re getting somewhere.”

I pretend I’m going to bite his finger. “Did you think about me after our night together?”

  “Yes, I most certainly did.”

“Are you glad I’m going to be doing the sex scenes with you?”

  “Yes.”

“Have you thought about fucking me?”

His eyes are hooded with lust.

  “Yes, Cadence.”

My heart speeds up. “Do you think I’m awful for being a hooker?” It’s a loaded question, but I really want to know. There’s no way I could ask him under normal circumstances. These questions, our close proximity, and the energy filling the air make me brave.

“No, not even a little bit.” He shakes his head and caresses my cheek. “Last question.”

  “Will you kiss me?”

His eyes grow wide. He leans up on his knees so he’s towering over me. “Yes.”

  Chapter 12

I lick my lips, preparing for his kiss.

John hugs me instead of kissing me. Total fucking let down. “I will kiss you, but not now. Not until I can do more than kiss you.”

My heart sinks and melts at the same time. He’s kinda sweet.

He moves over to the picnic basket and pulls out a giant sugar cookie. “You want it?”

  “Um, fuck yeah.”

He laughs and hands it to me. As I take off the plastic, he pulls out a cookie for himself.

“How do you keep your body looking like,” I wiggle a finger at his toned chest and abs, “that, eating peanut butter and jelly and cookies?”

He takes a huge bite. “Nope. I answered your twenty questions already, it’s my turn.”

I take a deep breath. This could get ugly. My best option is to try and get out of it. “I should be getting back. You know, I have a job to do.” I try to stand but he puts a hand on my arm.

“After. Come on.” He pushes me back onto the blanket.

“Fine. Ask away.” Maybe it’s better he find out everything. Then he can find me repulsive and move on, which will help me move on. I mean, he’s a fucking movie star. It’s not going to work out anyway.

The smile he gives me is huge and it reaches all the way to his beautiful eyes.

“Are you from L.A.?” he asks, getting right to it.

  “Yes.”

“Do you like being a hooker?”

Ooh, he doesn’t pull any punches. I kick myself for not asking him better questions. But how do I answer it? Of course I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it either. It’s all I’ve known. It’s kept me off the street. It’s kept me fed, clothed, and sheltered. If I felt I had another choice I would’ve taken it, but I didn’t, I don’t, and it’s what I do.

  “Yes,” I answer carefully.

He looks surprised by my answer, but quickly asks another. “Do you like fucking John Zane?”

Holy shit. Why did he ask me that? Does he really want to know? Oh, well, he asked for it. “Yes.”

He looks away, pulls out another bottle of wine, pops it open, and takes a drink right from the bottle. “You want some more?”

  “Yes.”

He fills my cup and I chug the whole thing down. I think I need a buzz to finish this conversation.

“Do you have any brothers or sisters?”

  “Yes.”

  “More than one?”

  “No.”

“Do you still talk to your sibling?”

“No.” I shake my head, suddenly sad. When we were younger my brother was my favorite person in the world. It’s old news though. I’m more saddened that John has wussed out. He can’t handle my honestly. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

He takes another long pull from the bottle. “After the six months, will you still fuck John Zane?”

  “No,” I answer immediately.

He seems to like that answer and smiles.

“Did you enjoy our night together?”

  “Yes. Very much.”

  “Is your head feeling better?”

  “Yes.”

“Do you want to fuck me again?”

“Yes.” I can’t help the heat the rises to my cheeks and between my thighs. I want to fuck him again and again.

He smiles, giving me full access to his amazing dimple. “If I leaned over and kissed you right now, would you kiss me back?”

Doing so would cross into shady territory. Zane never specifically told me not to be with anyone else, but the fact that I’m staying in his hotel room kind of makes it feel wrong. The thing is, if John Cruze kissed me, I’d totally kiss him back. Fuck the consequences.

  “Yes.”

“If I lifted your dress and put my fingers in your pussy, would you stop me?”

Just the thought of him putting his fingers inside makes me so fucking hot.

  “No,” I whisper.

  “Would your pussy be wet?”

  “Fuck, yes.”

His genial demeanor suddenly turns dark. Lustful. “If I then stuck my fingers in your mouth would you suck your pussy juices off?”

  “Yes.”

  “Would you like it?”

“Yes.” My heart is beating so fast I think he must be able to see it through my dress.

“And if I took off my pants and slid my cock in your pussy, would you let me do that, too?”

Holy shit. Nooooo! “Yes. God, yes.”

He licks his lips and moves so our knees are touching.

“If I pulled you on top of me, would you ride my cock?”

  Fuck. “Yes.”

“Would you come all over it?”

  “Yes.”

He chugs down more wine. I swallow, squeezing my thighs together.

  “Last question.”

I nod, waiting, unable to say anything.

“Would you be sorry about it when we were finished?”

The question isn’t one I expect. Would I be? If Zane found out, he’d probably send me packing. Hell, he might even kill me.

“Don’t answer that. We should get back.”
