A Man of her Own Page 12

“Here.” He offered her a plate with a small piece of pink cake. “Here’s a fork.”

Sarah’s hands shook. She looked down at the toad-shaped confection on top. Why was he going to extremes with this toad theme?

Lane grinned. “Go ahead. Try it.”

Smiling shyly, she stuck the tines of the fork directly into the green sugar toad.

  Her fork hit something hard.

“What’s this?” Sarah raised the fork and studied the gooey object on it.

“A token of my love. I knew you wouldn’t believe my words so I acted.” He waved his hand to indicate the room full of toads.

  “It’s a ring!”

“Yes it is.” Lane’s grin spread. He plucked the ring from her fork and wiped it clean with a linen napkin.

Very gently he removed the plate from Sarah’s hands and slipped the sparkling diamond solitaire onto the third finger of her left hand.

“I’ve asked once before, but now I will do it right.” Still holding her hand, he dropped to one knee. “Miss Colby, may I have the honor of your hand in marriage?”

Sarah’s mouth sagged open. The diamond was huge. Maybe three karats. She gaped at Lane. A powerful wave of love rushed through her. She’d been waiting for this for so long. It was real, wasn’t it?

At that very moment a very fallible Prince Charming was on bended knee, holding her left hand and gazing at her with hope. Lane Williams had filled her heart from the instant of that first kiss. Now it was time to acknowledge what she’d known all along.

The little flirt inside returned. “You’ll find, Mr. Williams, I’m a woman of action too.”

Scooping a large glob of pink icing from the top of the cake with the fingertip of her right hand, she smeared it on his mouth.

“Yes, I’ll marry you,” she said through tears. “I’ve discovered I enjoy having my cake and eating too.”

She placed her hands on either side of his face and stared into Lane’s love-filled eyes. Then Sarah leisurely kissed the frosting from his lips, knowing she finally kissed her Prince Charming, a man of her own.
