“I can’t think of anything that would make me happier. I can’t imagine my clinic without you in it. I can’t imagine my life without you next to me. I know this is sudden. And it’s hardly proper. But Anne…” Daniel held out his hand to her. “…would you allow me to court you?”
Her mouth fell open.
“If you don’t feel the same way, I understand. If you want to leave, I’ll pay your expenses anywhere you want to go. I understand why Kenneth loved you, Anne, because I feel the same way. I want you to be happy, whether you’re with me or not.”
Tears overflowed and spilled down her cheeks. She took Daniel’s warm, strong hand. “I would be honored to accept your offer of courtship.”
He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it softly. “It will be difficult, for the first year. You’ll have to write me every day.”
Her knees went weak. Was this some sort of cruel joke? “Why is that?”
“Because I can’t leave Salvation without a doctor while you’re away at nursing school.”
Anne felt like her heart was about to burst with happiness. God had given her everything she’d ever wanted. “I’ll make you proud.”
“You’ve already done that.” Daniel pulled her closer, kissed her softly. “I couldn’t be prouder.”
