Hunting Nora Stone Page 29

by Colin Weldon

Artemis nodded and took a deep breath.

“She said….” Artemis began before stopping.

  Shaw looked at her.

  “Who?” he said.

“The woman in my dream,” Artemis said.

“What did she say?” Shaw said.

“She said…” Artemis replied, “She said she was coming for me.”

Shaw was about to respond when he heard a crashing sound. He looked behind him and saw the doors to the room lying on the ground. His mouth dropped at what he saw standing the doorway. It was Nora Stone. She ran towards him with ferocious speed and before he could get to his emergency beacon she had both her hands on either side of his face. In one quick spin his neck was broken cleanly and he slumped to the ground. Artemis immediately stood, adopting a defensive position and glared at Nora. Their eyes met, a tear streamed down Nora’s face as Artemis looked at her curiously, still holding herself tense, ready to strike. Nora looked at the little girl, the little soldier. She looked at her arms as her heart sank.

“Look,” she said to her raising her own implants for her to see.

  “We’re the same?” said Artemis.

“We’re the same,” Nora said kneeling down.

“You’re the woman in my dream,” Artemis said still holding her defensive position.

“And the you’re the little girl in mine,” Nora replied.

“Are you here to kill me?” Artemis said.

Another tear ran down Nora’s cheek.

“No, I’m here to take you home, would you like that?” Nora said.

“I’ve done terrible things,” said Artemis.

  “So have I,” Nora replied.

Artemis lowered her guard and took a step towards Nora. She raised one of her cybernetic hands to her face and ran a finger across it drying one of Nora’s eyes.

“I don’t like it here,” Artemis said.

Nora raised one of her own hands and places it on her daughters. Their fingers touched.

“Then how about we get the hell out of here?” Nora said grasping Artemis’s hand.

Artemis smiled at her and nodded. The sounds of footsteps from behind made her turn her head for a moment. She turned back.

“I can fight,” Artemis said to her.

  “Me too,” Nora replied.

  “Then let’s go,” said Artemis.

Nora smiled and felt something new. Happiness.
