Pecan Nut Crunch Murder: A Donut Hole Cozy Mystery - Book 35 Page 7

“A series of choices,” Heather said. “A trail of breadcrumbs that lead back in time.”

  “Precisely,” Eva replied.

Heather squeezed the elderly woman’s arm. “Thanks, Eva. You always know exactly what to say.”

“Well, I have to bring something to the table, don’t I?” Eva brushed off her burgundy, knee-length dress. “When the beauty fades, the humor and the brains are all that’s left. And then, maybe not even that.” She winked.

Heather chuckled and turned her attention back to the celebrating children.

Lilly’s grin shone from the group. She leaned in and whispered something to Nicolas, and the two of them burst out laughing.

“There you are,” Amy said and bustled into the room. “You’ll never guess what I just found.”

  “What is it?” Heather asked.

Amy brandished a bright pink flyer, printed in bold black print. “Kate Laverne’s at it again. She’s hosting a cupcake fair of her own. Next Sunday.”

“What?!” Heather snatched the flyer from her friend – love and choices forgotten. “Oh my gosh.”

“This must’ve been what she threatened you about,” Amy said. “Why I ought to –”

“No,” Heather said. “No, we’re not going to get angry about this Ames.” She scanned the Comic Sans print. Goodness, she could’ve chosen a better font. The whole thing looked rushed. “We’re going to fight cupcakes with donuts and tea.”

“How? There’s no way we can host two fairs at the same time,” Amy said.

“We’ll just see about that,” Heather replied. She folded the flyer in two, then tossed it into the wastepaper basket nearby.

Kate Laverne had picked her battle.

And a battle royal it would be.

Heather’s weapon? Donuts. And Amy’s dry wit. And another week of preparation, of course.

But for now, Heather would enjoy the day and the time she had with her friends, and the little girl in pink, a dot of chocolate glaze on the tip of her nose.
