A Soldier' Womans

She sat up, biting her lip as she watched him dress. She sat on the edge of the bed and started to put her clothes on as well. She swallowed, trying to loosen the collar on her suddenly too-small turtleneck.
She glanced around the room, trying to think of something to say that would fit the moment. Nothing came to her mind as he grabbed his duffle and turned to face her.
“You ready to go?” He asked, meeting her gaze then instantly looking away.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be ready.”
She felt the tears well, and wished fervently for one more day, though she knew she wouldn’t get it. They’d had their time, and now it was over. She’d have to wait for his return, which seemed an eternity away.
They stepped out the door together. Holding hands, they walked single file down the hall. His brother’s truck waited in the driveway, engine running.
He dropped the green duffle to the ground. The thump reverberated through her bones.
“I’m going to miss you so much.” She’d said this very thing more times than she could recall over the past week, but she couldn’t help but repeat it now.
He stepped into her and placed his hand on her waist.
“I won’t be gone long. You’ll see. I’ll be back before you know it.”
He took her hand in his, lifted it to his lips, and kissed her fingers.
“I love you, you know.” He met her eyes, and the tears she’d been fighting spilled.
He loved her. They loved each other. She stood on tiptoe and kissed him softly.
“I love you too. More than I realized I could.”
He grasped her forearms and pulled her to his chest. “You better write me every day.”
“You don’t even have to ask, you know.” She held on to his arms.
“Don’t you dare find anyone else,” he said, his eyes glassy. He pushed her hair off her shoulder, smoothing it down her back. “I’m coming back for you. I’m gonna marry you.”
Her heart leapt. “You’d better.”
She stood on her toes and kissed him, putting every tear to be shed, every moment of impending separation, and every speck of her being into that kiss. She lived in it, died in it, and when at last she drew back, he pressed his cheek to her hair for a moment, then released her and turned toward the waiting car.
She watched them drive off, dashing a tear from her cheek. He really loved her… He would come back for her, and when he did, she would make him forget they’d ever been separated.
