  Horsing about with Frankie

Want to hold your own pony sleepover? Saddle up and try these cool games…

  Horse and Jockey Race

  Get into pairs.

One person is the horse and the other is the jockey.

The jockey jumps on the back of the horse in a piggyback.

On the word “go” each pair races against the other pairs to the end of the garden.

Swap over (the jockey becomes the horse and the horse becomes the jockey).

  Race back.

You could also race against the clock, rather than each other – get an adult to time each pair.

  Gymkhana

Use boxes, flower pots, garden chairs and sticks to make your own jumps around the garden (use a broom handle if you’re short of sticks).

Make a water jump by filling a paddling pool.

Time each person as they race around the garden, jumping all the obstacles.

Want to make it harder? Why not play the horse and jockey game and try jumping over the obstacles? Remember what happened to Lyndz and don’t make them too high!

Make your own rosettes or certificates to give to the winner.

  Make a pony with Lyndz

It’s probably not a good idea to bring along a real pony to your sleepover, but why don’t you make one? Then you can use it when you’re having your own gymkhana.

  You will need:

A long pole (4–5 feet long) or use a broom (ask first!)

  Cardboard

  Colouring pens or paints

  Sellotape and/or string

  Scissors

Draw the outline of a horse’s head on the cardboard and cut it out – make it as big as possible. Trace round it on to another piece of card and cut it out, so you have two matching head shapes.

Using colouring pens or paint, colour in each head shape – don’t forget to put an eye on each side.

Attach the horse’s head shapes to either side of the pole or broom handle with Sellotape and string.

Make sure everyone’s got a ‘horse’ and get ready to race…

And if you want to personalise your horse more, why don’t you…

Make a mane by cutting short lengths of coloured wool and sticking them on.

Draw on a bridle and accessorise it with stickers.

  Fliss’s Super Scrummy Baked Apples

Ponies just lurve apples, and here’s something yummy for your sleepover…

  You will need:

  4 medium sized cooking apples

  1oz (25g) dark brown sugar

  2oz (50g) raisins

  1oz (25g) butter

2 tablespoons (30ml) clear, runny honey

  2 tablespoons (30ml) water

  Set the oven at 200°C / 400°F / Gas mark 6

  Here’s how to make them:

1 Wash and core the apples.

2 Score a line around the centre of each apple with a sharp knife.

3 Put the apples in an ovenproof dish.

4 Mix together the sugar and raisins and fill the centre of each apple.

5 Put a quarter of the butter on the top of each apple.

6 Spoon the honey over the apples, then the water.

7 Bake in the oven for 35–45 minutes until the apples are soft.

Horses also love oats and carrots, so why not try making flapjacks, oat cookies or carrot cake for your sleepover feast?
