Why not try another historical novel, this time set in Canada in a later century:

  TO A FAR COUNTRY

In 1807 Flora has just given birth to her first child, Rosie, and suffering a feeling of disappointment she did not have a son, but Duncan is overjoyed. A few days later Flora's cousin Bruce Mackay and his children arrive, having been turned off their farm in Sutherland. They settle, but misfortunes continue, and they are all threatened. They have to leave the glen. Some hope to find work in Glasgow but most plan to emigrate to Nova Scotia or beyond, in the unknown territory of Canada.
